I got this code about 40k miles ago (@ 120k on my 2006 2.7). Luckily I did not go into limp mode. After getting the code I took it to my buddy who is a mechanic. He told me that if I am not going in to limp mode, there is no reason to fix it. Having had plenty of beaters before, driving around with the CEL has not bothered me. However, I have emissions coming up in June, and they will not pass the truck if it has the CEL on. I am thinking of buying the Hewitt-Tech kit with the pump replacement, which would run me about $400. Much cheaper than actually fixing it. My concern is that it won't pass emissions however. The Hewitt-Tech kit will keep the CEL from coming on, but it doesn't replace the function of the SAIS. Anyone have any knowledge on this? Will I pass emissions without a functioning SAIS?

The system in the 2012+ trucks is different than in your 2006.

I can't help you any further as I don't know anything about the earlier trucks.

Hey jsousa, like what was said above, my unifilter replacement was done to hopefully prevent another problem in the future. So far it works fine, although the sound of the pump sucking during initial start up seems to be louder than before, but I've learned that is normal. I replaced the filter because it was very inexpensive and easy to change out, for the chance it could help later.

My valves went at 49,000 miles, and was super lucky to have the dealership replace everything (valves, pump, filter, and hoses) for $0 out of pocket. I'm keeping myself informed for any future problems that could happen. I am crossing my fingers that Toyota may recognize the problem, issue a complete recall, and we all will be covered 100% for any future problems.

From some of the things I have read above, is it possible that Toyota could recode the system to fix the problem (make the pump turn on at start and shut off), or is it a matter of a completely newly designed part? I guess it doesn't really matter if Toyota doesn't recall anything.

I think it will all depend on where you take it as you'll probably pass the smoke test but could fail visual. Though that will also depend on how knowledgeable the tech is to know what's not supposed to be there.

Should be! But the local dealer's service rep pulled out his little book and tells me that valve assembly, 25710-31022, is covered on the Tundra, on the Sequoia, and most infuriatingly, it's covered on the Tacoma 4-cyl, but not on the V6. How that makes sense to anybody is beyond me. Rep was the antithesis of helpful.

Service Director found a TSB that refers to this issue - more on Monday when Toyota USA opens back up.

Don't hold your breath. I just talked with Toyota this week. My valves went out last week at 40,800 mi. They told me to kick dirt!

Post up what you find on the TSB, curious about this and what they say regarding the issue.

Go find a competent dealer. It says so on the warranty manual page 25.

You would think that the warranty information listed above would cover it - no questions. It's amazing we are having so much trouble getting compensated.
Not sure if this is a dumb question or not, but for people on the right coast, would the "California Emission Control Warranty" help us over here, or is that something specific to only CA?

CA is the only state that has it's own different emissions warranty. If you look at your emissions tag under your hood, it might say something like 49 state compliant.

There's 11 other states that have adopted California emissions standards per Google. One would think those folks in those states may have a better chance of having it replaced under warranty that the rest that are not...

So it sounds like dealerships in the other 49 states would not honor that warranty on those parts.

Dealer service departments have some sort of more in-depth warranty coverage book than the one available to owners. Both the rep and Service Director kept looking things up and at one point were telling me that the valve assembly was covered under warranty on Tundras, Sequoias, and the 4-cyl Tacomas, but not the 4.0.

After taking today to call Toyota USA, the rep called me back and is offering me the same compromise deal that others have been offered; he even used the same terminology - the "goodwill" gesture - they'll cover the cost of the part if I pay the $300-whatever for labor to install.

See my post #309. CA emissions warranty states that is covered if you're under the 70k miles.

I did, believe me! Haven't been back in there again since; haven't had the "I'm starting to get upset" meeting with them yet. When I do, I for sure will be armed with a hard copy of the warranty guide.

Just yesterday I had the code P2442. I live in Oregon that has adopted CA's emissions warranty.
But the service department said only the 4 cylinders were covered. And they wanted $105 to plug in the truck to the computer. I asked if that would be waived if warranty picked up the cost or if I had the work do there. Nope it was going to cost $105 at least. Well I told them I and my family had bought at least 5 New cars from them and I would not be doing that anymore.
They did not seem to care and told me to have a nice day as I was leaving. They Suck

I ordered the valve and replaced it myself. It cost me about $450 from a Toyota parts dealer online. It took me 2.5 hours to replace the parts and about $65 in tools. The P2442 code is gone. I did notice lots of moist in the rubber pipes connected to the valves. I also noticed about 5 ml of water in the secondary air pump. I opened it up and dried it with a cloth. I think putting a desiccator int the rubber container is a temporary fix. I am not sure of a long term fix. Thanks for your help.

I read an article pertaining to the same issue on the tundras and one option was to disconnect the wiring harness from the pump. The cel would still be on but it would take it out of limp mode.

The smog tests I have been to recently in norcal do not hook up anything to the exhaust they plug into the obd, that's it. With a CEL or one cleared within a day or two will surely fail.
