Inside that round housing with the screw that looks rusted to hell should be the OEM internal foam filter that you want to remove before it disintegrates and is ingested into the valves. The idea is to remove the OEM internal filter, and replace with the after market Uni filter externally.

This was from almost a year ago:

My truck went into limp mode and the Toyota dealership blamed the K&N intake. I didn't believe them. After getting the truck back from Toyota I put the stock intake back on it. I took the air pump and the valves apart and the amount of moisture in them was unreal. I guess by moving the secondary air pump to the front of the engine bay and turning it around backwards allows it to suck in road spray. Luckily I had purchased an extended warranty so it cost me $110, not $1600.

Now I need to see if I can get my $110 back.

HI, My foam filter had failed. If you go back to post 463 on page 24 in this thread you can see photos of the filter (what is left) jammed in the old fan blades. Funny thing about the rusted screw is that as bad as it looks it was easily removable. Next time I am by my fave fastener place I am going to remove it and find a replacement. I live one block from the Ocean and I have replaced lots of fasteners in the engine compartment and bed. It's a work in progress! Hope this helps. Tim

I had all kinds of trouble with this damn secondary air injection bulls*/t. Valves failed at around 30k, replaced them and at 60 it happened again. This time one of them shorted out internally and fried. I filed appropriate complaints which went unanswered the first time. After getting it repaired again I tossed the receipts(dumb move) and today I get a letter from toyota. Letter acknowledges the problem and states that should I have any problems to take it in to toyota and it will be covered. Futhermore, if I have had any problems then I could recieve reimbursment BUT there is a catch. I have to show an invoice of repair specifically stating that the air injection system needed repair, reciept of payment, AND the work was done at a toyota approved shop. The first repair I did myself, not difficult to do btw, so thats out. The second time caused me to doubt myself so I did take it to a reputable shop. But I dont know if he has the original invoice, no idea if the shop is "toyota approved", and just threw away the receipt. THIS SUCKS! Does the bypass kit really fix it for good? I heard grumblings around about the kit and more so the customer service. Can it be used out here in so cal or does it fail smog?

Yes it will pass smog in Ca fine, no it does not necessarily fix it for good. I bought my truck 3 years ago with 50k on it at a steep discount because it had this problem and the owner did not know how to deal with it. I bought the Hewitt module right away rather than the oem repair so it would be a permanent fix rather than go through what you did with multiple failures. The first Hewitt module that i bought never worked properly and was hell to get a replacment and he actually charged me for the "new version" that would work. I was pissed but stuck so i bought it to keep my truck running. After running this module for over 2 years it has failed also. I am thankful that Toyota has stepped up because i am removing this bypass module and letting the dealer replace the bad parts. From what i understand the new parts they install have a fresh warrenty and is actually a different part number and this problem should not keep happening .
    Good luck

Another option gentlemen, is the OVTUNE for the 4.0 that is in development.

He can simply erase the computer programming code related to the saip. Then you can remove the entire pump and valve assembly completely and use the space for a second battery of something.

The Hewitt bypass requires a working pump. The computer polls the pump on startup to ensure there is a functioning device, even if the Hewitt bypass fools it into thinking the truck is hot and the pump system doesn't need to run.

It's not cheap. Around $500 I think. But that gets you the handheld tuner with different custom tunes.

The Hewitt isn't cheap either, nor is a pump replacement. At least with the OVTUNE you get the tuner

What covers up where the valves used to be? Wont that be a giant red flag to smog test technician? What do mean development, it isnt actually finished and for sale? Sorry for all the questions.

You would have to put a plate over the valves or fab something up. Or you could leave the entire non functioning system in place.

We don't have smog or inspections here. I doubt the smog tech would be clever enough to notice a missing pump if there's no CEL but who knows.
