Other than trading in the vehicle I have loved for 5 years, what is the best course of action to prevent this from happening again. Assuming they replace the air pump and reset the codes.

If it's a pump failure, most likely the foam filter fell apart and got sucked into the fins causing damage. See this post for a replacement filter.

If it's the valves, there's a by-pass kit available but from what I understand, you need to have working valves before you can put the kit in.

I may be asking for too much, but I will be telling Toyota to look at these while they are replacing the pump. The tech did say to me that they will be testing other issues during the pump repair.

They gave me several pages of print out sheet for the parameters testing that they did on mine after replacing the pump.

Man are you lucky many have not been able to get it covered under the powertrain warranty, me included I only made it to 53k. Most likely it will happen again as they are just replacing the parts with what is already in place, 13-up trucks have a software revision to run the pump after shutdown to try and help the issue. Toyota quietly issued tat change and left us 2012 owners with a failing system. Once your new valves are on, invest in the bypass and you wont have an issue going forward.

The bypass you are talking about, is it the Hewitt Tech the guys refer to in this thread?
Also, I'm having trouble understanding the issue I have. If it is a software problem, that the new pumps only fix temporarily, wouldn't that mean that every single 2012 Tacoma would need this repair? I'm not sure that is the case, is it?

The bypass is the Hewitt tech, it basically tricks the system into thinking its under 40* at startup so that it doesn't run. The issue is that moisture destroys the valves. The 13-up trucks cycle the pump at shutdown to help elevate the moisture in the system, 2012 trucks do not. It would be my guess that yes all 2012 trucks will need this fix, Tundra's also had the issues but Toyota covered there systems. Don't understand why we get no help from Toyota on this when Tacoma outsells the tundra by a great number. My only guess is they have spent to much money on frames and leaf springs...

I've been reading about the bypass on this thread:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...it-2012-4-0-updated-21-oct-2016.394629/page-4
But I am not confident in my electrical skills. If I went this route, I would need to find a shop to install, and it seems there are a few other issues we run into after the bypass is installed. I'm really not sure what the best course of action is. The dealership is replacing the pump today, but I'm not sure what else. The guy I am dealing with seems very knowledgeable about Tacomas, and is very understanding of the situation. He is aware of the bypass kit, but seems to think it is not a guarantee that the new pumps he is installing will cause the same failure in the future. Not sure if he is just trying to make me feel better or not.

File a complaint with NHTSA like we all did. Hopefully in the future this can be covered if enough people complains.

The pump itself is not the failure, it's the foam filter inside that comes apart and gets sucked in and breaks the fins in the pump causing the failure. A simple filter replacement will take care of that problem. The valves however will eventually get gunked up and get stuck. The bypass can take care of that issue but you're right, I believe you can potentially encounter a code with the bypass which I believe can be corrected. Ask others who has the bypass if they have any issues.

Huh? This is a 1GR issue, not 3rd gen, though there are some other troubling issues there.

Correct. I don't think they lease used cars. Also 3rd gens does not have smog pumps though direct injection motors can have its share of issues due to carbon buildup.

Issue is predominantly on the 2012 V6 but if you have the pump and the valves, it can also happen to you. My 2015 needed pump replacement at 7,800 miles.

My exact thoughts. I believe the D4S 3rd gen engine has the self cleaning feature during idle. Hear mine from time to time when parked and running.

I have a question. I have a 05 2.7. I checked the foam filter on mine and it still looks and feels fine. My question is how would this "limp mode" affect a manual transmission?

I would assume it will limit your revs. When I had my manual go in limp mode (different car), I was unable to rev past 2K and going over a certain speed, the car would bog down.

ahahh...so my 2013 should be OK ? I opened it up and the filter is fine...but I am not planning
    on digging into it further

Like I said, 2012's are mostly affected but it can also affect 13-15 since you have those parts. It's not just the pump that is affected but the valves can be affected as well. People have pulled the foam filter and replaced it with something else so there shouldn't be any pump failure at all.

We've been using Uni Breather filters.
