I’m not buying the filter. I’m still on factory warranty and I hope in 2 years there will be a full delete option available for the 2012-2015 Tacoma.

Getting the filter won’t stop everyone’s problems. I’m more worried water getting inside. Unfortunately this unifilter won’t stop water from coming inside. Matter of fact might make water come in easier.

That said. Full delete option is the best solution.

How will the original chunk of foam prevent water from getting in?
I think the uni filter would be better at preventing water from getting in compared to the foam

Not disagreeing with you about the delete though

I'm not saying that the foam will not let the water in. But there seems to be more surface area on the unifilter to potentially let water in. Water is worse than having particles get inside the system.

Again to me the ultimate solution to prevent any problems is a full delete. I off road alot and go through stream crossings, etc. So I do not want this system at all, especially since I am coming from a 2009 4runner 4.0 V6 without this annoying system.

My concern with the uni filter mod. is that it’s a paper filter material in an area that does get moisture.
I’m thinking that paper filter material still needs to be washed and cleaned periodically in order to filter properly due to fine dust and moisture eventually closing the pours on the filter.

There’s a reason why some dirt bikes , ATVs , lawn mowers use foam and foam lube and require periodic clean and re-lube.

From my dirt bike days, I just see this as a maintenance item with the stock foam filter every 2 or 3 yrs with proper filter lube. It takes like 5 min. To get the foam out. Foam filter lube will keep the foam from drying out and catch dust and debris. I’m not drinking the kool aid on this mod.

@OVTune and their handheld tuner supposedly allow you to turn off the SAI system. I'd love some more info on this as a full delete with headers would be a very cool upgrade.

From Uni Filter's site.... "Uni’s Breathers are made of a new washable urethane which needs no oil or special cleaners." That said, it's not a paper filter....

I never said the uni filter needed oil, I said the filter will need cleaning. All filters need cleaning or replaced. All filters catch debris, that’s there purpose. The debris doesn’t automatically evaporate or disappear. Eventually they become clogged and restrict air flow. The paper filter term I used was wrong I grant you that. But the material that it is made of has has no effect on what I was saying. It still needs cleaning,it still will hold moisture and trap dust and debris and needs cleaning. Your bold print confirms that. It actually means you need to wash and clean them. You just don’t need a special filter cleaner.
So what it’s made of is immaterial.

I would bet that a lot of people think they just slap on a uni filter and thats it. Problem solved forever. Nope! You still need to clean that uni filter. OK, so why not just clean and maintain the stock foam filter with a little lube to keep it from drying out.

Do you have a recommendation for a good foam filter lube? I see that Unifilter sitting there either completely open or only half covered. It has the potential for water contamination, the cause of many of the problems with the system.

In the past I always used maxima because you could pour a little bit into a baggie and toss the filter in there to work it around. But with my little foam filter with my truck I just wanted to keep it moist and prevent it from drying out and eventually breaking apart, I didn’t need the tackiness of a true foam filter oil, so I just used a little fluid film and it works like a charm. It’s lanolin based so in won’t degrade the foam,
a small amount is not tacky like true foam oil, it can be washed out with dawn dish soap and warm water.

It’s so easy to check and a no brainer to me. Another thing to think about, if your truck is still under warranty and you take it to a dealer with a engine problem and forget to remove that uni filter
I can’t help believe that could maybe cause some problems along the lines of an altered engine in there eyes.

The uni filter makes sense to me with someone with an old truck out of warranty with a dried out foam filter that’s about to fall apart due to lack of maintenance. But that’s not me and I would bet it’s not the case with most people.

Regarding water contamination, I suppose it depends on how the truck is used and one should adjust accordingly. I agree that every filter requires either cleaning or replacement, but I've yet to see the OEM foam filter regarded as a consumable and can be replaced and or cleaned (in Toyota's eyes). It certainly opens up a hornet's nest and replacing it with a Uni-filter could be the lesser of two evils. It might not be the magic elixir to save every pump from failure but if you're beyond warranty, it is something worthy of consideration.....

For the record, I changed mine out on my 2012 but not on our 2015.....

I'm not familiar with Fluid Film so I had to look up the MSDS for it.....

Unless I'm reading the composition incorrectly, there's a strong presence of petroleum products. I looked up the aerosol form but the brush on was very similar. Could I have been looking at the wrong product?

    https://ihiqa2kjxfb4dhp9872la1cm-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/SDS_Aerosol.pdf

Refined petroleum oil, hydrotreated heavy paraffinic, Petroleum gases, liquified sweetened, Calcium petroleum sulfonate

Edit* In their FAQ section, regarding plastics & rubber - "FLUID FILM has no adverse effects on plastics. Caution should be used around non oil-resistant rubber goods. May cause swelling."

It could be cause for concern, but I'm not positive......
