Harden your bark, there are storms on the horizon.
Not to rub it in, but I love my Old, 'low feature' truck more and more every time I read something like this.

Just did this mod yesterday. Foam filter was all hard. Glad I finally knocked this out.

Looks good. I am jealous of your clean engine bay. As soon as that part of my warranty expires, I plan to do this mod too.

I removed my uni filter this weekend. It was running for an extended period of time and sounded like it was struggling to get enough air to make the sensor happy.

Anyone think the uni filter mesh is to tight for the pump? Maybe even cause a premature failure?

Can you get a new foam filter or do you have to buy the entire pump?

How long have you had it in?
Maybe it’s clogged. Tolerances seem tight all around except for the bottom so I figured I’d rotate it to expose a cleaner part of the filter if needed...

    Huh...
What was the condition of the foam filter you took out?

I did the swap last fall and haven’t noticed any issues with it.

    Sorry I don’t have anything else...good luck.

I have over 70k on my uni filter mod and no issues. Dosent mean yours isnt having issues though. Pull it and try and see through the mesh.

So I found a K & N similar to the uni filter. I was wondering since K&N makes their filters out of cotton, if that wouldn’t be better than the foam used in the uni filter? Haven’t had my truck long but it’s got 56k on the clock so I was planning on doing this mod. Would like to just do it once. Also what do you guys think about using a prefilter as well?

I did this filter swap last Wednesday and today was the first time since the mod that I'd ran the truck. I noticed the Secondary Air Pump isn't running immediately when I crank the truck, but it kicks on like normal when I shut the engine off. It's like 90* here so it may be because it's already warm out, but is it normal for the Secondary Air Pump not to run on every engine start? I could swear I remember it running every single time, but maybe I'm delusional.

The uni filter is going to sound louder in general than the original foam filter. The pump doesnt have trouble sucking air through it even after a long time... mine has been on for years, I might of blown it out to clean it once or twice but it still flows just fine.

I looked all over a while back and couldn’t find one. That’s when I had the bright idea just to lube the existing foam with a little left over foam filter lube from my dirt bike days. The problem with foam filters is they dry out and eventually break down and start to crumble. Hopefully, keeping them a little moist with foam filter lube solves the problem. I just squirted a little lube in a baggie, tossed in the foam filter and massaged it real good.

    Any updates on this issue?

Just stopped in a dealership because the check engine and traction control lights went on. They told me the secondary pump is stuck closed and that had it stuck open and a certain code had thrown it would be warrantied. Disappointed to say the least. 2012 V6 with 52k miles.

Check your gas cap if cel and Trac lights are both on. My wife’s 4runner had those lights and all it needed was a new cap. $22 at Toyota.

I don't believe that is correct. I just had mine warrantied and it cost $0.00. All I had was a pending code. This is on my 2012 with about 65K.

I just pulled the pos terminal to reset the CPU and all the lights dropped off. Thanks for the tip on the gas cap. That was the first thing the tech checked. Their receipt says the code was P2443. Hopefully it will stick open cold in the morning and throw the warranty code. I've got a second dealership 30 miles up the road I can deal with too.

Thanks for the letter, too. Just saved it to my phone to take with me.

Whether it’s stuck open or closed it’s faulty and the warranty extension should apply.

    Try another dealership!
