This might not be the answer your looking for but totes can offer decent security I built this rack for a cross country trip a year ago in which we have recently returned from and we used totes . I measured every thing and with it all closed you could not pull one item out as a hole . You could pull a drink out of the side coolers but not any food from the center one .

Thinking either get the metal bedsides to replace the plastic and get some nuts welded that will allow the bed rack to bolt in. That or removable crossbars. And just leave the mounting points always in. All I really want mounted up on the sides is the hi lift for now.

This is great! I don't suppose you have any measurements or anything on the bracket- is it welded into the inside? I am looking to do nearly exactly this.
4 holes in the plastic trim- no big deal. I assume these line up with holes underneath it in the metal bed?
Thanks! Wish I saw this earlier :D

I heard thru a local truck supply store that Pace-Edwards and Thule are working on taller feet/bars for the Ultragroove so you can do a RTT. Timeframe for release was 3-6 months from now. That is one of the reasons why I bought the Ultragroove, in addition to having accessible lockable storage under the bikes. Will post more when I hear more about it.

check out Truck Covers USA. Their American Roll Cover (with the rack system) is pretty bomber! Was the first major mod I did to my truck and it has made the truck so damn useful. Aluminum slats that can lock every 12" if you don't need the whole bed covered. You drill 3 holes in the side of your bed and run drain tubes (sounds scary - it isn't) and it sheds all water off the cover and keeps all your gear dry and is fully lockable to keep everything secure.

If you get the rack system, they pre-weld Yakima tracks and mounts and bars. Can support 500 lbs which would be plenty for an RTT.

    http://www.truckcoversusa.com/american-rack-system/

What I also love about it is since it uses the standard Yakima mounts you can take off the bars in 10 seconds flat for times when you need to haul larger stuff for projects and whatnot.

Their website doesn't show one for a 2nd gen Tacoma. I would love one of these...

As for Voodoo, I have their TOYOTA TACOMA HI RISE CROSSBARS, FOR USE WITH TONNEAU COVERS (FITS YEARS 2005 AND UP), and an Extang Solid Fold cover. The Voodoo bars work, but that's all I can say. Not thrilled with the quality, fit, or coating. The knobs screw into brass nut-certs, and these are already getting loose. I'm going to have to get some actual nuts welded on at some point in the near future. Also, the coating on the inside/underside of the bars is thin and inconsistent, and began to rust immediately. They will work, but...

You’ll be around 1500-2000 if you go with either the USA Truck Covers or the Ultra Groove. You can remove the crossbars the same way in either system. I didn’t want a lock on the top side of my cover so I went with the Pace Edwards, but the USA doesn’t take up much bed space as it has the smallest canister.

I went with the Pace Edwards since all my racks are Thule.

$2K delivered including the Yakima tracks/bars/locks. Thing is bomber.

I even sent them a note recently asking what kind of touch up paint they'd recommend as I have a couple of very minor scratches in the powder coat from cam straps and hardware and their answer.. "we'll send you some of the original paint so you can match it perfectly..." arrived yesterday.

    Check out Undercover Ridgelander.

    http://www.autoanything.com/tonneau-covers/undercover-ridgelander-tonneau-cover

I'm sold on this one, just saving the bucks as it is spendy. But it comes with racks included, and seems to be the way to go for me. Removable and can use racks without the cover. I did e-mail them asking about use of a RTT, they advised that I should use a 3rd rack for support and not to open it with a RTT attached, FWIW.

I'll likely follow the 3rd rack recommendation but will likely test the "don't open" theory. I'm thinking that has something to do with either the struts ability to support, or if the load will cause the racks to slip along the track system. Or maybe it's simply a CYA type of statement.

I looked at a number of the hard covers with bars and you are correct, the struts are not strong enough to hold the cover up. Confirmed from several different local suppliers. You need to take off bikes in order to get access to it without having to hold up the cover. That being said, you could figure out the weight of everything and get stronger struts. I am sure someone has done this already.

I like this guys' videos and he did a pretty intuitive setup with his DiamondBack cover but with his RTT it makes the cover un-openable. Might be worth a watch for anyone looking for a solution.

Are you limited to only Yakima, or will it work with other crossbars/racks?
