    You’re right....
I know it sounds bad, and it is....but theoretically, how could a cop chase a speeder or even a perp of another crime if he was lawfully bound to protect every other innocent bystander on the road who might be endangered by the chase (or the shooting of ) ....His greatest obligation is to society at large and not individuals. So strong is this law, they had to over ride it with special laws requiring arrest of a suspect if even a hint of child or spousal abuse was present. It seems silly you have to force cops to protect individuals, but it’s very tough on cops now.

My company does not hold that credo.

This is what my company has as a credo:

It is every security officer's fundamental duty to protect lives.
    Duty to protect property.
Maintain order within the proximity of the place of duty.
Protect the interests of the work site.
Have no prejudice while on duty.
Honest in words and in actions within the scope of your assigned duties.

I am also as the original post said, Certified in Basic First Aid, CPR, use of AEDs, and a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) member (well certified for it anyway, nearest team is Fort Walton Beach (50+ miles away). So what makes a 'First Responder'? Say if a retired firefighter or paramedic or an Auxiliary Police Officer responds to an incident WITHOUT being 'dispatched,' are they a first responder?

I work in Armored Transportation(Armed Security). I prefer to not be considered a first responder. While my job isn't actually an On-Site/Patrol Security position, it doesn't seem like given our licenses that we would know the first thing about responding to critical incidents.

Have you seen the retards that work for Signal 88/Securitas/Allied? I wouldn't trust them to wash their ass let alone make critical decisions

I would say they aren't a first responder, just at the right place at the right time (or opposite depending on circumstances lol). Kind of like an off duty doctor or nurse happening upon an accident and responding to urgent medical needs. Not first responders, just happened to be at the right place and right time.

As for certifications, those are great to have and everyone should become certified if possible. Quick application of CPR will improve outcomes and AEDs are becoming more common in public spaces (like schools, malls, and offices) but they are useless unless someone knows how to use them. However, that doesn't make someone a first responder. At a local school district all staff members are required to hold those certifications with free in house certification classes (except CERT) including lunch ladies and janitors but that doesn't make them first responders imo, just prepared.

I would say no. Not saying Security Officers don't deserve recognition but the "Security Officers" I have worked with are worthless. Like oretaco said, the companies he listed will hire anyone lol. They are clueless

So here is a weird thing:

I am a non-sworn, uniformed, armed employee of the Sheriffs Office. We are labeled as "Security Officers", we wear different uniforms than Deputies but we have the Sheriffs Office pins on our collars, county shoulder patches. We are in charge of security of the courthouse and all other county buildings. First Responder or No? Not sure where we fall because we respond to disturbance at the courthouse, county buildings during business hours and on an on-call basis. We also do most of the training Deputies do and the same background Deputies have to go through.

Shit, wanna talk about worthless. I had an unarmed Paul Blart try to tell me to not carry my gun in the mall. I was at work, in uniform, performing my job as CIT worker.
