My CEL came on this morning (2004 Tacoma 2.7L at 190K), drove about 10 miles to get home, no smell, truck seems to be running good. Code reads---

P0442 - Evap system leak detected
P0446 - Evap Emission Control System Vent Control

I'm sure the codes are related, what's the order of operation? Lowest cost to to highest pls. I've read a few threads and YT but I would like more elaboration, hopefully someone with the same engine or better yet have fixed the same issues. Thank you

Check gas cap first, if original put a new toyota gas cap on.

Would this address the P0446? Seems this would be quite lucky if it worked, but it's worth a shot. In my rather strict state, emissions aren't tested on vehicles that are 20+ years old. Something to keep in mind, as a 2004 (I think) may require lifting the bed or dropping the tank to access most of the EVAP components, including the VSV. Not impossible for DIY, but potentially a pain in the butt.

This is the quickest and cheapest thing to do. The P0446 code, yes that would be great but you never know. For the evap monitors to run the truck needs to be in a test state, between 1/4 and 3/4 full fuel level, ECT within 10 degrees of outside air temp and sitting for a minimum of 8 hours and it has to do this 2 times, i.e. 2 trip test.
