If it was an attack dog like a police dog I would let it bite my arm...and then use my other arm to grab it or try to grab the collar and twist...choking it out. There is no way that dog that bit you was trained to attack in personal protection or police work. It would have bit way harder and start thrashing around. My friend is a K9 officer and I train sport dogs with him. He is generally a decoy for the dogs at his department, and one day he was not in gear and a dog recognized him and came after him..with quick reaction he let the dog take his arm so he can control the dog before it was pulled off by the other officers.

There's a device I've had for years called a Dazer. Looks like a garage door opener. Emits a squeal that humans can't hear. Dogs can't stand it and instantly drop their ears and get out of range. Works like a charm and its harmless.

If you play with your dog as rough as you say you do, then you know that when you slap them in the ribs they cough. When they cough they stop what they are doing for at least a few seconds. Now I know darn well that a dogs skull is thick and punching them between the eyes is a no value add. But if you go for the most vulnerable spots ie. the throat, that is the best you can do. If it is more than one dog lets face it........you are in deep shit. Bottom line is every situation is going to be different, its hard to kick them if you are on the ground with a 120lb dog ontop of you.

That would work it will keep on coming towards you...and eventually get you....That is why if you let the dog bit you...it will hurt like a son of a bitch but you have control.

The throat is the best place to hit the dog. If you see them in the wild, they will go after each other throats when they want to kill.

I always heard that trying to pull away 1) Ain't gonna work if the dog is big enough to be giving you trouble in the first place and 2) is gonna rip the shit out of your arm. I'ld try that little sonic thing first. Nobody gets hurt and you don't have to deal with an angry owner or (in the case of a dead dog ) a lawsuit.

Thats how we get them to hang on in a timed hanging event. Slapping them in the ribs eggs them on. I certainly agree but fighting a dog as if it were a human then its a no go and you will certainly be injured. If the owner is irresponsible enough to let their dogs get loose and get at a person then why would you think their dogs have all their vaccinations! I would rather use the umbrella, or a sound device to protect myself. And wold recommend those options to others. Worst case scenario when the animal catches you you then in turn grab a hold of it and keep it from fighting, if it has your arm already let it keep it by shoving it in as much as you can stand while you hang on. I would never own a dog that is a man biter, unless the dog was provoked or getting an intruder.

When attacked by a dog, two fingers to one eye, ball of the palm directly to the nose in a upper ward 75 degree angle. If that doesn't work break the neck!!

Don't count on spray working 100% of the time. I shot a dog once after spraying it with OC just made it more aggressive.

Last summer my friend Bob got a call from his wife who told him that two pitbulls were in his front yard eating their cat. So he comes home and finds whats left of it. He calls animal control and tells them what happened and they say they'll send someone out. So while he's waiting he takes a walk through the alley behind his house. About half way down he spots them but unfortunately they see him as well. He stood completely still and they just charged at him. Both dogs latch on to him. One on his ankle and the other on the inside of his bicep. So Bob starts kicking the dog that's on his ankle with his opposite foot. Lucky for him he was still wearing his work boots. He landed one solid kick to the dogs neck and it released his leg and took off running. This all happened while the other dog was still locked onto his arm. He said he was so scared and his adrenalin was going so much that he didn't even feel the pain. The dog was ripping his arm apart. He tried punching but the thing was solid. He even tried slamming it into the block wall but the pit would not release his arm. So Bob tries the only thing left he can think of. With his free arm he reaches around the dogs neck and starts squeezing the life out of him. He finally collapses to the ground, still choking the dog until it just stops moving. Bob gets up, bloody and mangled, pulls out his cell phone and calls 911. Bob just killed a pitbull with his bare hands.

He is forever a legend in our neighbor hood. We now call him names like "Bob vs. Wild" or "Bob the Doggy Hunter". Someone even put a sign in his yard that said "Beware of the Bob". He had to go through a bunch on surgeries and has some nasty scars.

Holy chit, I've done a lot already!!
I am gonna have to go with pepper spray or the stuff designed to prevent dog attacks and then your biceps and maybe a knife as your last resort. Something like this.... http://www.amazon.com/Halt-Dog-Repellent-1-5-oz/dp/B000E4Q7BS I only feel this way because of the few points brought up in previous posts. You can face a lot of legal trouble if you kill someones dog and you have no proof of an attack. From what I am reading, there is a lot of talk about a bully breed, ie apbt, attacking, you will NOT stop an improperly raised bully breed until you kill them. That is why they are used in dogfighting. Hurting a bully is only going to get them more aggressive. Temporarily blinding them can give you a chance to flee. You said something about getting nipped, that is not an attack. That most likely is a "hey get the f*ck out of here", which I still disagree with. As some people have commented, a lot of puppies mean NO harm but are just jumpy and playful. Some dogs look perfectly fine and then flip. If you are afraid of pepper spray blow back, I suggest you spray yourself. I am not kidding, really anyone who carries it should be sprayed. So you spray and it blows back and misses your target and gets u. Now you are screwed if you don't know how to handle it.
I am not a fan of rough play with a bully breed, but that is my preference. Some of the reasons are brought up here, nipping and chasing and things of that sort. A bully breed needs to be raised as all humans are alphas, but to protect its "den". Very hard line to draw, but can be accomplished. In no way am I saying not to defend yourself, but just be wise. You can't walk down the worst street in NYC and shoot somebody just because they approach you. I feel bad that a lot of people stereotype pitbulls because of their bad portrayal, but they are good dogs, loyal and loving if raised right. There are NO bad dogs, just bad owners. Watch "Pitboss" on animal planet, he shows no fear when it comes to that breed.

my dad has had several run ins with our neighbors black lab while out walking. which is weird since i thought labs were suppose to be super good tempered. but i came home one night and his arm was covered in blood and he refused to clean it until the cops came to see it. it has run out to meet him in the street multiple times to bark and growl but this time it took a chunk out of his arm. he told the neighbors he wasn't gonna press charges or anything but that he will carry his gun from now on and the next time it bears his teeth at him in the street he will just shoot it. a gun would be my first choice, but since that is not an option for you i'd do pepper spray or a large light knife. alot of fixed blade diving knives are light weight and shouldn't weigh you down much. but just a heads up, if a pitt decides he want to kill you, i doubt your gonna come out looking too good with anything but a gun. a club will just piss it off. you have to carry something that will kill or injure it enough to break off its attack.

sorry, i forgot to tell thethe reason i told the story about my dad. it was to show that a lab can do alot of damage if it wants, a pitt can do un imaginable damage.
