okay first off before you read on this is a debate wheather I sell my 2005 4.0 6speed for a still 2nd gen Tacoma maybe 12 and up or keep it. I don’t want any negative comments so if you don’t feel the need to comment nicely I’m giving the chance to exit off and if you care to read here i go.

I bought a 2005 4.0 6 speed 4 door short bed trd sport in November of 2017, I have never owned a Tacoma before I always had jeeps. I have also been a fan of Tacoma’s and I always wanted one. I have the luxuary of my grandpa and ucncles who own a car lot and get to go to multiple auctions. So they stumbled apon my truck. My uncle gave me a call and told me about this truck. He got a good deal because of auction price.
It’s exactly what I was looking for, 4 door 6speed 4.0 and short bed.
Now about the truck: it had 165,000 on it when my uncle bought it. It came from a Toyota dealership when the original owner traded it in for a brand new Tacoma. My uncle has all service records from the truck since it had 8 miles on it. The only owner even kept all his paper work for service and the original order forum he had when he wanted the truck. (I also looked on Toyota owners and have everything also) this guy had it serviced at the dealer every 5,000 miles all the way until he traded it in which was at 164,000. It has the new frame also that was done at 155,000.

So it was good everything checked out and I truthfully didn’t know of any serious problems with these trucks my cousin has one and loves it and I jumped on it and bought it.

After buying I joined Tacoma world and started reading about the 05s having some issues like mostly I’m worried about head gaskets. ( no I checked there not blown as of now) I’m just worried that it might happen. I already changed the steering rack and am going to need new shocks since they are stil stock shocks. I’m mechanically able to do most things like it needs a throw out bearing so I am able to change the clutch but getting into head gasket is a little out of my comfort zone but Any other mechanic work I can do I’m not worried about.

So my question is this is the exact Tacoma I am looking for if I bought a new one I would want the same thing maybe a different color. But should I ditch now with 170,000 and know I can make a couple grand or is it stupid to move on to a newer 2nd gen when I have one already. I might just be paronoid witch I accepted already but I just want some expert opinions. It’s hard to find these trucks in my area for a good dollar they are like gold for some reason in northeast PA. So am I actually gaining anything buy moving up in years or no not really and I should stop worrying. I’m open for discussion just please no negative comments. Thanks for reading!

I’ll keep it simple. Keep what you have and fix it when you cross that bridge. It sounds like you have a good history of what was done before you owned it so founding that again would be tough and kind of pointless.

Keep what you have, you may never have a head gasket problem, only a few had that.

I agree keep it, fix it, then mod it will be like a different truck. A head gasket repair is cheaper than a newer truck.

The money you saved in getting a good deal from family, combined with the miracle of finding a one owner with maintenance records makes this a deal to keep. If you bought a newer model 2nd gen, you are rolling the dice on its history. At least with this one you know what has happened.

A newer one probably won't be sitting on a new frame as well.

You are not alone. I have an 05 with 114000 miles and have been doing my own maintenance since new. I never beat it or even push it too hard. Every once in a while, an Italian tune up but that is it.

My only fear is the head gasket. I expect a wheel bearing to quit pretty soon and maybe a drive shaft seal or a crank shaft gasket, but that head gasket thing looms.

I will probably get it fixed and keep it due to the relatively low miles.

I hate to break it to you, all Tacomas have head gaskets. So any Tacoma could experience a head gasket failure.

I would be more worried about your frame than a head gasket.

Don’t worry about bridges until you cross them.

Any vehicle can experience any failure at any time. It’s not a reason to sell it.

    Keep the truck.

Keep it bro! 2nd gen best gen! Also finding another truck with all it's maintenance history will be rare since most people on here do their own maintenance

New frame? KEEP IT!! My friend has a 06 TRD Sport 4X4. Has beat the shit out of it, no head gasket problems yet. I think he's close to 200k miles also. At 170,000k, if you were to have issues with the head gaskets, it would have happened by now..

Thanks for all the reply’s guys. Yes I think I might just be worrying to much, ive been known to worry alil more then I should. I think I am lucky to find this truck, I know I’m going to have some mechanical failures with 170,000 it’s not the trucks fault. I already have a touch screen radio and got subs for behind the seat so I guess I’ll already have most of the newer technology in my truck just have to get a back up camera and it will be just like my truck is a newer one! Plus side to owning a Tacoma is being able to be apart of a pretty sweet community here!

I’m all about the “new shiny” so I would trade it in. I have a 2009, am the second owner with only 70k miles, and I want to trade it in or sell it for a newer 2nd gen. I may not be the model you are looking for :D
