So I currently own a 2012 Jetta TDi 6 speed manual. I've always wanted a Tacoma and come October 18th, when the buyback is official, I am pulling the trigger on a 17 TRD OR 4x4 DCSB. Anyone go from a TDi to a Tacoma or currently own both?

My buddy is selling his back and was going to get a Tacoma until he test drove mine and learned about all of the issues toyota is slow to address on them.

Now he is looking at Nissan and Colorados. He actually prefers the look of the colorado....I can't agree with him there. But it's his money!

I am not a fan of the Colorado but I don't hate the Nissan. Even with some of the issues it seems like the Taco makes it up in other ways. VW is giving us 2 years to decide so waiting for the 18's may be an option as well to see if anything is improved.

    Thanks for the comment

You don't have to buy a new vehicle.

Sweet used Tacomas are available too. Your buy back $ might get you a more paid for truck if you shop around the '13 models or so.

I would hold off on the Tacoma. You might find yourself having to do a buy back again through Toyota with all the issues this thing is having. I would wait for the new Ranger or Bronco.

Unless you really need a truck, I'd keep the TDI for now until Toyota figures out all the bugs in the turdgens.

True, but I am worried about the lower value of the VW even after the "fix" that lowers MPG and performance which for a diesel is not the best anyway.

I have considered looking at the used market but they are either still $30k+ or $25k+ with 50k-60k or so miles on them if I am lucky.

    Thanks for the input

I thought about that. I am in need of a truck and have been looking around for about a year now, even before VW came out with the diesel scandal. Really love the diesel but I have about 67k miles on her now and in need of tires and breaks...Also I have read that if something were to happen such as an accident, it could void the buyback option or if it is claimed totaled I am out $10k or so.

It is an interesting situation, we will see what happens but I am still inclined the pull the trigger on a new Tacoma.

You could always get a nice 2015 that doesn't have a bunch of small issues. I'm sure you could find one with low miles or brand new if you look around. Then you don't have to be one of those whiny people who never shut up about how much they hate their 3rd gen.

Own both. '12 MK 6 Golf 3dr TDI 6-speed Shark Blue. Waiting on the payout as well to replenish the bank account from buying the Taco.

Bought the taco to upgrade our camping style to a TT http://www.lancecamper.com/travel-trailers/1475/ from car camping. Other wise it would have been one of the many sports cars on the market.

Depending on your driving style and if you LIKE to drive. Say...every highway onramp is an opportunity and cuss out Mini vans, SUVs and pickups the poke around a cloverleaf on-ramp while you would rather be making the tires scream in protest from lateral Gs then the Taco may not be for you.

Test drove a Ridgeline yesterday and to be honest......if it had been out in the spring it would have been my choice. :crapstorm:No comparison in the driving/ comfort experience ON ROAD. Mind you I have a 300 mi a week commute so the on road driving dynamics hold a high place on my priority list. It's no sports car but it is a dayum site better than the Taco.

Do you have an idea of what the buy back value will be?

    Thanks
Thanks for your input. This Jetta has been the first "car car" I have ever owned. I had a 93 Ford Explorer 4x4 manual before and loved that tank. I am young and don't really care about ride quality, Jetta not the best anyway, and in a diesel now so speed is not something I have to have.

I like the off road ability of the Tacoma, like I had with my explorer, and what I used to think of as Toyota reliability.

I went from a 2006 GTI to a 3rd gen. Not quite the same animal, but even with its issues, I trust this vehicle much more than any VW. I don't believe Toyota would leave you out to dry like VW often did for me. That being said, I still miss the way my GTI drove when she was running well.

There are 2 crowds here on TW.

    1. The new 3rd gen Tacoma is totally awesome without a single problem (the fanboys)
    2. The new 3rd gen Tacoma is a complete piece of shit and gave them cancer (the haters)

Have fun reading all the responses from these 2 groups.

Lol, so true. Unfortunately I'm in the cancer group. I loved my runners and was so excited to get my 16 after a 6 month order time. Only to find out it's a turd. It does off-road very well and is a lot of fun, but I do have to drive in on the road once in a while.

WOW, I feel like I could have wrote that!

I had 05.5 early MK5 DSG with both Head light washers AND launch control and when that thing was running well ....WOHOOOOO!!!
When VW @ 65,000 mi said no more out of Warranty fixes I bought a *cough* Camry SE *BORING* Bought the TDI and felt like I was home again. Great MPG and Handling in one package. Then Diesel Gate. Parked it for the reasons the OP listed. Bought the Taco knowing I was sacrificing on road fun for weekend fun.

    Sorry OP.

Back to your regularly scheduled programming.........

FWIW My Taco has been trouble free.

Could you give the OP an explanation of what you don't think it does on the road well? Based on what I've heard about the Hitachi's the OR do have a pretty bad road ride compared to the SR5s.
