I currently have a 2013 pre runner DCSB I bought new. It’s got 185k on it. 2.5 lift, leer camper, stealth 6 wheels and various minor mods. All fluid changes done on time per Toyota maintenance schedule. Never had a single issue with the truck besides rotor issues and now the clear coat is fading on roof and hood.
I’m very strongly considering selling it for a used 3rd gen 4wd DCLB. I’ve heard the 3.5 is not as reliable and even though it makes more hp it doesn’t feel like it. I’ve also read about trans issues with 3rd gen.
So my question is, should I upgrade or dump thousands in my truck to get it repainted because Toyota won’t admit there’s a problem with MGM paint. Just not sure if it’s worth it or not.

Ummm your truck works, as far as we can tell. And I’m guessing it’s payed off.

where as a 3rd gen used is at least $33k and brand new, $45k.

that’s a lot of money. I would say just keep rocking your Tacoma. It will last a lot longer.

and the paint, shop around where you live. Not the professional collision shops, but mom and pop shops. I bet you can find someone to paint your roof and hood for about $500.

I know a guy local to me that paints for $150 a panel. So hood and roof would cost me about $350-$450 since they are bigger then most panels like a fender or a bumper.

and finally, your truck is how you want it. With the lift, tires, shell……those are not cheap things. You will have to buy everything all over for the 3rd gen.

I was thinking of getting a different truck as well, but I have about $4000-$5000 worth of aftermarket stuff installed on my truck. And it’s how I want it. Lift, headlights, interior, etc.

and one more thing, if you buy a used truck….you don’t know how it was driven, taken care of, or maintained. Could have been someone that did 20k oil changes on it.

I can post pics tomorrow. The roof is almost silver. The hood has visible cracks in the paint. I need 4wd for hunting grounds and it would make me feel more comfortable on some boat ramps around here.

Well, if you NEED 4wd, you know your answer. I liked my 2nd gen better than my 3rd gen, but like them both. I don't notice a difference in power between the 2. I'm not under the impression the 3.5 is less reliable than the 4.0. The transmission shifting on the 3rd gen is noticeable, but I don't have an issue with it. I get better MPG with my 3rd gen. They both are good trucks. If you NEED 4wd, you know your answer. If you don't, I would stick with what you have. They are both nice trucks.

Yes it’s paid off. And yes it runs flawlessly.
I know it will las for another 100k but the longer I keep it the less it’s worth.
I’ve checked around at some local shops. In south Florida unfortunately a lot of them are no longer around and the ones that are want 4-5k to paint it. It’s not just the hood and roof it’s also the doors by the windows. If I could get it done for $150 a panel I would’ve already.
I know my truck is how I want it and I’m looking for one that’s at least already lifted. And I’m looking for one with low miles that’s still got powertrain warranty.

I’ve heard that getting a tune really levels out the shift points well. I’ve used my 2wd on all the hunting trails and it’s done better that a lot of full size 4x4s but after really bad rain and a lot of trucks rutting it up it gets sketchy. I probably honestly need the long bed more than anything else. So I guess I don’t NEED any of it but it would make some things a lot easier

I've heard the same about a tune. I've looked into it, but probably won't do it. If a long bed would fit in my garage, I'd probably have that. Realistically, your truck wont lose too much more value over time. Luckily, the depreciation kind of tapers off at some point, probably because it's a Tacoma. You might have trouble selling/trading in your truck with the paint issues. Looks matter. It's your money. It's definitely a fun problem to have of not being able to decide what nice truck to drive.

The 3rd gen is solid, you will hear a few internet commandos and hyperbole, but it is.
That said, no reason to buy in this crazy market, especially a newish Tacoma, the resale is ridiculous. You are in perfect spot to drive out (pun intended) this booshit.
Also, defiantly test drive a 3rd gen (or any other modern vehicle) the big GOV has MFG's going for low emissions and higher MPG's, so that has to come from somewhere.

I upgraded this winter from a 2011 Off Road DCSB to a 2023 Off Road DCLB. There was absolutely nothing wrong with my 2011, in fact it had just received a new frame from Toyota. But, I wanted the modern creature comforts of heated seats and mirrors and remote start. From the few thousand miles I've put on the 2023, I can say it feels just as solid as the 2011 and I have no regrets with the purchase. Better mileage, and while the shifting is a bit annoying, I probably won't go for a tune...I think over time, I will get used to it and learn to work with it.

Sounds like your minds made up. You bought your truck brand new. Look how well you did, why not trade it in towards another brand new one.

    I agree with the above.

I traded in my 2010 for a new 2021 and have no regrets.

My situation was somewhat different as I was approaching the end of my free frame replacement time limit (original frame on the truck) and, living in NH, I felt it was only a matter of time until I faced a very expensive problem if I kept the truck. I had a bit of a sense of urgency.

The 2021 now has 15,000 miles and been issue-free. Coming from a Tacoma, I think you won’t have the issues some have raised (because they want the Tacoma to either behave like their previous vehicle- a car or a full sized truck).

That said, in your position with only cosmetic flaws to worry about, I might wait another year or two. I doubt your resale value will change that much and 3rd Gen prices *might* go down as the 4th Gen is released (depending on how the new truck is received). Heck, maybe the 4th Gen will prove so good that you’ll want to get a new 2025.

$5K worth of maintenance and cosmetic fixes would certainly buy you two more years.

Drive your beat up 2nd Gen with pride and drive it into the ground! Don't get into debt over a faded paint job.

DCLB 4x4? is a hard combo to find in certain areas new. i cant imagine hunting for a used one unless you're willing to travel to get it. If going used stick with 19' and up they seem to have solved most of the problems in the 3rd year of production. The newer you get the more stuff you get such as power driver seat in the 20' so on and so forth.

rented a new 23' when traveling a few weeks ago and was underwhelmed with the info-tainment system compared to other vehicles ive rented lately.

Do you just want something newer? Something with 4x4? Assuming your 2nd gen is paid off....it sounds like you have no payments and a reliable truck :smack:. To each their own but I would run that 2nd gen till she dies.

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
^- This about describes my position 2, going on 3, years ago.
Owned a perfectly running '06 TRD OR 6 spd MT. Realized that I'm getting older and loan qualifiers get more difficult when on SS so I agonizingly decided to order a 3rd gen TRD OR.
Sold my 15 yo, 127K miles 2nd gen for $10.5K cash. Missed the sweet spot for selling a used Taco by about a year - probably could have got another $2-5K for it.
Doesn't matter though. I've made the transition to a '21 TRD OR AC auto. The transmission and I have adjusted to each other. The '21 is definitely better on fuel mileage than my '06 was. It has a few more creature comforts than the '06 had. For me, there's no looking back and no second-guessing about "Did I do the right thing?"
BTW, it tows my 1500# trailer with my 2000# Kubota on it with no troubles (in S mode). Which is about the most I'm looking for out of it.
    No complaints, no regrets.
You do you and what's best for you.
EDIT: BTW, the '21 Taco will be paid off by the end of the Summer.

So many good answers. The deciding factor is 4x4 or not. If yes then a new truck is needed.
If you can afford the payments then most likely a new 2023 would be ideal.
Timing? What will be going on in the supply system in the not too distant future? Uncertain for sure. That and not liking what I see in some aspects of the 2024 Tacomas is why I jumped on a new 2023. Plus the last year of a vehicles generation is the most refined of that series and it takes a few years to get the next iteration right.
I'd get the 4x4 either way because having it is worth the cost penalty and minuscule fuel savings over a 2 wheel drive.

I forgot to include the FUD of what is coming in 2024 to my list of reasons for wanting a 2023. And, like @Fast Wheels said, usually the last year of the generation is the most refined. Can't believe I forgot to include those as reasons...coffee must not have kicked in when I originally posted.
