Go drive one. Personally the 4.0 in the 5th gen is lethargic.

We have both. I had a 2016 Tacoma, traded it for a 2014 4runner then went to a tundra. Loved the 4runner but needed something bigger. Life changed and we didnt need the tundra anymore. Wife just took delivery of her 2021 4runner Pro and I got out of the tundra into a 2021 Tacoma again. It really depends on need but both are very nice. The 4runner is a little easier for me personally to get in and out of. Seating position is higher in the 4runner so it feels to me like it sits higher. I enjoy the Tacoma a lot tho as well and it didn't make sense to have two 4runners in the garage. I would say go drive the 4runner and see if you like it. Having both tho, the 4runner feels like it has more interior room, you don't sit as close to the B pillar as you do in the taco. It's all preference tho.

Thanks guys, I am going to drive one as suggested, I may not like it. When I drove a Taco the first time I loved it. Wife hates it. She will not drive it. So this is another reason getting rid of the Taco. I am not messing around with trade in. These dealers Jack prices up to make you think you are getting a good deal. I just started shopping. Here is the want column

As the owner of both, I can unequivocally say that the 4Runner fits all of my wife’s needs.

It’s just the truth. The biggest fails ever to come out under the Toyota brand were Japanese made. It was almost a scandal at one point. I’m not sure they have changed their ways, but I trust NA manufacturing more.

I’ve owned both in TRD Pro trim and the 4Runner is 10 times better. Should have never traded it (just got rid of the Tacoma). T4R was much more comfortable and even though they are supposedly the same size on the inside, the T4R felt bigger. on long trips the Tacoma killed my back, where as the T4R I could have driven forever.

However, I will admit the T4R is no speed demon and I had to run it like a manual if I needed to do anything quick.

Both sold for more than what I owed on them, the T4R significantly more, so that’s one good argument for the Pro model if you think you may not keep it very long.

Might not be a bad idea to take your wife to the dealer and have her drive the 4Runner ... and also maybe a Highlander and a RAV ... if you are committed to Toyota as a brand (and, why not, a it is a solid choice). I would also take her to look as some of the smaller Lexus SUVs just to get her reaction.

No judgement here. In our house the wife is the one to not only approve everything but to be the key decision driver as well. Otherwise, you will be back in less than a year and looking to trade in your new 4Runner ...

Good luck ... please report back on how it went ... really curious to see what you end up deciding. But my strongest advice is to have the wife be the one who does the road test! :)

4runner isn’t bad, more space in the rear. Would test drive one and compare to a highlander if you like the space. Got my wife into a 4runner and she’s loving it.

Just by seeing all the old sought after land cruisers and 3rd gen 4 runners still chugging along on the roads everywhere.

Yeah! Sure! With the fubar (from the factory) crap 3.0L. Leaked oil and had a blown head gasket as it rolled out of Tahara. Such a high mark! Or was that the 2nd gen? Who cares. Crappy quality control.

Highest mile Toyota’s are all the NA production. Tundras and Camrys and Corollas made state-side. Toyota started building proper vehicles when they got North American precision and expertise involved.

I went from a T4Rto Taco. Both are great vehicles. I miss the interior space of the 4Runner, appreciate the bed space of the taco. Can’t go wrong with either imo.

How do you run a T4R “like a manual”?

I have both in the driveway. I’ve lost track of the number of friends that are in the market and ask if they can drive both of our trucks. It’s really hard to love the Tacoma after getting in the 4Runner. It’s a lot more comfortable and is definitely a much more “family friendly” vehicle. However, if you need a truck to do truck stuff... the Tacoma is a no brainer. It just depends on what you’re after. If you’re trying to satisfy someone that wants comfort and expandability for a family then the 4Runner will always win. I will say that my truck (which has gears, heavy shit attached to it, and 33’s) will smoke the 4Runner in any sort of race, on any surface, in any condition, any day. The throttle response is much better. The Runner is a dog when going uphill and is mostly stock. I couldn’t imagine adding tires or any sort of weight.

I own a 2020 4runner trd and had a 2018 tacoma trd off road. Way more tech on the 18 taco than the 20 4runner (take that as you will) the 4runner is heavy, I believe 4700ish pounds. Shorter wheelbase, fully boxed frame, mine has kdss (hydraulic assisted sway bay that "disconnects" during off roading) back seat is way roomier than the taco.
