Have both. Have about 400,000 more miles on the 4R. You're going to love it. You are still going to need another truck though. Buy you a good 2004-2007 full-size truck with a long bed for that day when you need one.

We have both, the wife has the 4Runner TRD OR and I have the Tacoma TRD OR. One thing I do like a lot on the 4Runner is the KDSS she has, thing rides well on the road. It really comes down to if you need a bed. The 4Runner drives a bit better IMO, and definitely has more passenger space. No bed is a bummer is hauling anything, however there is some decent space to put things in the back of the 4Runner. Love my Tacoma, and the wife loves her 4Runner. Can’t go wrong with either IMO (FYI the 4.0 feels better compared to the 3.5 in the Tacoma)

So this is why Toyota North America's most renowned manufacturing engineers all went to Toyota Japan for their training and education, right?
Eh, that's a performance article, not really reliability. What needs to be mentioned here is the 22r, the 1UZ, and the 5VZ. The 7M definitely shouldn't appear anywhere near reliable unless you like green milkshakes. That said, the JZ motors are obviously bulletproof, though the North American one is more sought after than the JDM one.
Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System. It uses a hydraulic system attached to sway bars to reduce body roll.

    My dealership gave me a 2020 4x4 SR5 4Runner for a few weeks.

It rode better than my 2018 V6 4x4 Tacoma, seemed to have more power, and the trans shifted a lot better.

I drove it from Palm Coast FL to Cincinnati Ohio. When I take my truck I have to make 2 gas stops, had to make 3 in the 4Runner.

If it wasn't for the fact that I just like having a truck, I'd have traded my Tacoma in on it. Loved the color too.

^^^^This, but it also allows the suspension to articulate without fighting the sway bars in off camber situations. It's excellent for weekend warriors, and those who just want reduced body roll.

No, both of my Supras have had 1JZs.

I rarely ever go to MacDonalds, and when I do it's for a single cheeseburger and that's enough to satiate my childhood desires for a few months.

I almost traded my Taco in on a new T4R a month ago. The main reason I didn't is because I sometimes carry tool boxes, gas cans, dirty things I don't want inside with me, plus I like having a MT. I do wish the rear seat was larger though on the Taco.

Of course right now I'm sort of wishing I'd bought a Supra or something with a small trunk. I took my GF to Wine Country along the central coast of Ca this weekend and she fell in love with a 100 year old Victrola which is coming home with us. I knew I was in trouble when I heard her say to the shop owner, "Oh it's no problem, we drove my BF's truck." LOL!

I’ve had both. The space/opening between the floor and the roof on the Tacoma is more compact. I have to duck a bit to get in. The 4Runner has a taller opening. It’s easier to get in and out. I still like driving my Tacoma more. It’s less refined, noisier, etc. But it’s more fun. My experience only.

Wasn’t talking about you. General statement, actually.
But yeah, paying cash for a vehicle, then trading it in for another, paying the difference, then doing it again doesn’t sound as badass as paying for 3 2020’s cash haha.

    Sharp spikes in front

I got a 2021 4Runner off road premium (get the damn rear locker if you know you’re going on trails). It’s the black color. It was listed 45. I ‘negotiated’ it to 38k. I also traded a 2016 highlander limited platinum with 42k miles for $ 26k.

From another area, I believe I got a deal but you never know. They got it on a Friday, called me, i showed up that evening 1hour before closing to ‘look’.

I had cleaned out my highlander just in case. I was kinda discouraged by none being available in OR, Wa, Ca ... ID - everywhere. And the nw jeep dealer were shady crooks.

But, it worked out. I like it a lot. It’s not as refined, and it has mucho roll in the suspension. But it does very well so far. I’m scratching the hell out of it each weekend little by little.

the SUV has more comfort, interior room, and storage with air conditioning and heating. So unless you haul stuff... no need for the truck.

I would not have gotten as regular SR5 though. Without the locker and other stuff, knowing I go on trails, it would have been my mistake. It’s night and day once you can’t move, lock the rear, and it’s like you were never stuck to begin with. Usually on hills where atrac just won’t work as well.

I’d say do it, but get the trd pro or off road. The 2021 comes with LED lights - a huge difference. The premium has adjustable seats with material way easier to clean.

It’s high up of course. So some sliders/steps is a good idea. Not the Toyota option though.

if you are patient, you can order one to your preference. I with I would have done that for the trd pro version. But my off road is close enough.

getting the deal is more what you believe than a price. Did my 3 or 5 k reduction really matter? Not really. It wasn’t cash from my pocket immediately. But it does have value. It does not affect my lifestyle or anything so it’s more of a ‘feeling’.

these damn things have been in demand even since 2016 when I got my highlander. So it’s a sellers market.

Both have their uses. I need a truck, so getting the Taco was a no brainer. Price wise, minimal difference so it is a need thing. If you don't need a truck, then get the SUV. I got rid of my truck and got an SUV and found I needed a truck. So I grabbed the Taco. Best mid size truck. Most households have more than one SUV. Why? Who's truck do you borrow when you need to pick something up, lol.

The best kept secret in Toyota 4x4s. A used GX460 same year, same miles is less than a 4Runner and you get a V8 and all the Lexus stuff.
