You can't compare a 3.0i coupe to a newer S54 engine M car... the parts on S54 is expensive on almost everything. With a motor like that...you don't want to run anything other than recommended...the viscosity difference with vanos is not good. The tranny was difficult...manual was better than SMG from what I hear, but it was still clunky. Use the wrong viscosity (same grade different brand) and you'll have shifting problems. The BRZ was much worse about 10 times worse...but my E85M was still a pain until I used royal purple, but it was only good for about a year...still notchy.

Getting BAR sticker... you have to use all the smog equipment and factory exhaust from the donor motor. The motor have to be same or newer year... just a lot of hassle... pretty cool you got it to pass... Would love a LS3 or an ecoboost 4 cylinder into my Regular cab.. just never found a good shop that can guarantee it would be seamless and pass everything with DMV. Props to you for the conversion.

    Ha, I just went the other way around two months ago, traded my 2008 E90 M3 4.0L V8 for a 2.7L I-4 4x4 Taco :D

What the difference between a BMW driver and a porcupine?
A porcupine has the pricks on the outside.

You should buy the BMW, you'll fit right in.

I have an e46m3 autox/track/fun car and my taco is my daily. An e46m3 is fun but I wouldn't use one as a daily. They can also be higher maintenance but if you DIY you can mitigate your costs.

Don't. I regretted it. It took a long time before I found a replacement 1st Gen to replace the one I got rid of for an M3. The M3 is sold but I do have a daily driver, still an E46 ... a 330i Sport, which I've put 210k miles. I couldn't be any happier to have BOTH my Tacoma and the 330i. The M3 was just too expensive, parts and upkeep. And, I do most of my maintenance work. But if you have the money ...

I do miss this car, just not the maintenance.

Definitely have a 2nd vehicle. I had an E46 M3 and it was a great car, only sold it because I bought a house. It's all about being proactive not reactive when it comes to maintenance. I wouldn't buy one unless you have a garage, a decent set of tools/know-how, and a 2nd vehicle for when you need to do the inevitable maintenance. With all that being said...I'm currently in the market for an E39 M5. Bah golly I love those cars.

I had to do it because I'm moving to a house 6 miles off of a paved road, so no regrets ha! But, going from a 420hp 8400rpm screaming V8 to a 180hp I-4 took some getting use to. Also, twice now I've tried to put my 5 speed Tacoma into 6th gear (like on the M3), which is REVERSE on the taco... oops.

I was in the market for an E39 M5. I found one, silver with black interior. Wife convinced me to get the 330i Sport sedan instead. Her reason, "you'll never get out of first gear during rush hour on the 405 freeway." For those you who live in the LA area, you know what the 405 parking lot is. As much as I love the E39 M5 . . . she was right. Then I bought and sold the E46 M3. I still have the 330i.

I wouldn't, I made the mistake of trading my truck for a car and every time I seen a TACO on the road I would drool and regret my decision.

Just S/C it, slap on some bolt ons, regear and call it a day! Best of both worlds and cheaper in the long run with the low maintenance of your TACO.

No matter what you do to a Tacoma it isn't going to handle as well or be as quick as an M3 (well......it could happen but it'd be a fully built truck that would cost more than just buying an M3). IMO, Best of both worlds would be a Taco and a Miata with forced induction or an Elise if you want something less common.

Traded it for the Tacoma. One of the reasons is to avoid spending money for mods on the Beamer. So after getting the truck I started visiting this forum ..... :D couple of weeks later I dumped 2k of accessories on the taco :annoyed:
