Just sold my girlfriends mustang to carmax. They offered $3000 less than average retail on nada.com. Hers was all stock with a little dent on one side. Lift wheels and tires will actually lower their offer by a few thousand. Craigslist man, I just sold an 03 explorer the other day for $1400 more than carmax offered.

You can go ahead and get a price guarantee from CarMax, then offer it privately using that as a reference. They don't charge you anything to give an estimate. I'm sure lots of folks would give you their offer plus $2K or $3K in a heartbeat. You might also find the CarMax salesman knows someone looking for a built truck and can point you in the their direction for a little cash. Folks come in there all the time looking for specific vehicles that aren't on the lot.

I've found the best way to sell my vehicles when done with them is to park them in a local credit union parking lot that becomes a sort of "sell it yourself" lot every weekend. It usually has 50 or so cars and selling there is free. I bought my "new" truck yesterday after I found it there Saturday.
