New to Tacoma World and I’m looking to sell my ‘05 V6 6 speed SR 5 with 223k miles. It’s an access cab, silver too. The frame is solid had a new one put in when I got it with the recall. It’s been up in the salt so other things are rusted and what not. The only issue with it is it needs a head gasket (it’s leaking) and possibly a catalytic converter too.

It’s been pulling a cylinder 2 misfire code for a month, a rough start in the morning when I start it. So I brought it to mechanic to do a compression test. He wasn’t able to get spark plug #2 out so I then brought it to Toyota and they did a new fuel injector and 6 plugs. That day brought it up north a few exits and the light came immediately back on. Brought it back to dealer and then they said it was a leaking head gasket and quoted me $11k for a new engine and converter.

Talked with the wife and we ended up getting a new used ‘17 Highlander (family will be growing soon) so an suv would suit us better.

I want to get as much for it but not sure what to start it at. I know I can’t get much but any cash would help at this point. I would keep the truck which I love but we are only allowed 2 vehicles where we live so any advice would be helpful.

Find an independent shop you can trust and get an estimate there, either for the head gasket or for a used/reman engine install then sell it for a private party price. Head gasket could be $3 to 4k investment, but if the truck is nice, you could get your money back and then some. Not sure what prices are in your neck of the woods but getting $10-$11k for a comparable truck/mileage wouldn't be out of the question around here if the body and interior are in good shape. Or just sell it as-is with full disclosure as a mechanic special for $3-4k.

I Kelly Blue Booked it and the range was $7,000-$9,500 for a fair condition vehicle. That’s an option thanks

Ya know what I would do -- if I had a trusted mechanic to do the head-gasket repair, I'd pay to do that -- then keep the vehicle and drive it another 5,000 miles before trying to sell it.

Then you have the repair done, but even more important, reasonable evidence that the repair was done well and is holding well.
