The sport mode bump-shift (sequential shifter) is backwards. Should be a forward bump under braking is a down-shift and pull under acceleration should be up-shift.

The fix is simple. Swap the pink and purple wires on connector J50. Takes about 10-minutes. This is on iForce Max hybrid.

It’s not backward at all. You’re setting a limiter, not selecting a gear. Up=limit goes up. Down=limit goes down.

in a gear SELECTING shifter, those should be backwards. But the Tacoma has it right for its actual function

    huh?
in the sport pocket the shifter moves forward and backward and sequentially moves thru the gears. in a sequential mode, a forward bump should be a down-shift and a pull should be up-shift.

Toyota (and most other mfrs) have been doing this for decades now, opposite to how sequential shifters work in race cars.

Porsche Tiptronic shifter from the 1990s:

many mfgs use different configurations and do not try to conform to the bump-shift sequential gearbox operation of forward-down shift and pull-upshift.
if you like it the way it is then your fix is to do nothing.
i'm just providing a simple 10-minute method to change the bump-shift operation if desired.

    ^Sure, thanks for the information.

It's splitting hairs at this point, since the shifter will disappear in a few years, replaced by a dial

The s mode isn’t sequentially selecting the gear, it’s setting a “range” of gears in which the trans operates. That’s why you can leave it at 7 and just drive all over town.

What is the procedure for lifting the plastic plate that has the indicator and shift boot?
    Does it just pry up?

    TIA

If you're driving in snow all you do is hit the snow button and you're good? No experience or nothing just put it in snow mode and go.

there are four clips that hold the shifter console in place. just grab it and work it free from the clips. no tools required.

it doesn't matter whether it holds the gear or not. the mod referenced above changes the direction of the shift lever bump for the up-shift or down-shift.

It's less Tacoma and more mod
Gets confusing going from a motorsports sequential trans, my BMW (which is the same as the motorsports layout) to the parents GM junk that does it the same as Toyota here, backwards of racing convention but probably right compared to other appliance vehicles.

Right, I’m just saying that when you make your mental model about setting the max gear available instead of selecting a gear like a sequential, it’s intuitive.

    s doesn’t stand for sequential

*One owner annoyed with it. Rest of us seem to use it just fine.

I’ll admit this bothered me at first with the Runner and the Tacoma, coming from Mazdas, in which at least the ones I had were stick down for sequential shifting up and stick up was a downshift. But I got used to it and as people have said, it’s a truck.
