Hand calculating is the only way. Whatever the onboard says, its usually off. Sometimes by alot.
FWIW, Ive only had my truck little over a month. Filled up 4 times so far. Each time the truck says Im getting around 23.6-23.9 mpg per tank. When I hand calculate by dividing the number of gallons put in by the miles driven since last fillup (reset Trip 1 at every fillup), I get closer to 22. Thats quite a bit off.
Im still happy as heck with 22, as thats very good for a truck. But I also drive like a grandpa (cuz I am one) and I live in flatland midwest.

I used to get like 24-25 when it was that new… it’s broken in now and gets a healthy 18… downhill…. With a tailwind…

Idk why people think the cluster is remotely accurate. I use fuelly for all my vehicles, will see how the Tacoma treats me!Screenshot_20220921_204403.jpg

All depends how you drive it. My truck will usually give a 385-416 miles to empty reading after filling up. I usually don't let it get much below a half. However, two days ago I went until it said I had 5 miles until empty and only ended up having to put 18.6 gallons in. Based on the 19.7 MPG I was getting on that trip I could have gotten to 413. Another caveat is that it will begin to drain the "miles to empty" meter faster once you get around a quarter tank. I noticed mine ticking off a mile roughly every .6 miles.

What tires do you run and when was the last time you used any fuel system cleaner or replaced your air filter?

On that note: after 75k, I asked my dealership if they'd ever replaced my air filters since I'd never seen it charged and the inspection was always checked green. Sure enough, they hadn't and, as if by magic, it was ticked yellow after that. They changed it at the next service. My most recent service was the first one since the change and they ticked it yellow again despite no driving out of the ordinary. Can't find good help these days.

I have a brand new 2022 Tacoma TRD Off Road, V6, 6-spd manual transmission. I filled it up tonight. Here’s what I can report:
    • 2199 miles on the odometer
    • My last fill up was with 89 octane fuel
    • 18.296 gallons
    • 438.3 miles
    • 23.96 mpg
    • Mixed driving, about 50/50 city/hwy
    • Seems to match what people are reporting on here.

Not really, YMMV but its basically all the same and even your own experience is confirming that. The onboard calculation is based on 19 gallons but as I said we are all basically getting the same regardless of how you drive.

You must be driving like 55-60 or have the wind helping significantly. 70 in 6th gear in mine is about 16.5-17 mpg max. Maybe 18 on the very best day which is almost never.

Yes. On an earlier tank I saw that this truck really starts to hurt (MPG’s) above 65 mph. I do drive 60 mph on the highway, and the MPG’s are even really good chugging around town at 40 mph.

Toyo open county at3, 265/75, air filter should probably be changed. And could run some cleaner too

Don't write "chugging". I've begun to notice also the chugging the vehicle will do between 40 and 43MPH, with the engine turning crazy low RPMs. :frusty: I try to get out of that region of operation. Going up steep inclines, I sometimes engage ECT. I've never owned a vehicle in 40+ years of vehicle ownership that behaved (? behaved is a poor word choice here) in this manner.

For a 2022, should I believe it came from the factory with the latest and greatest flash to avoid "chugging" or is that "stuttering"? I have zero hesitation which is nice, but it is turning very low RPMs in that speed range.

It's so new, I dare not get a non-OEM ECU tune. With all respect to the tuners out there, you cannot be sure that will not be used as an excuse to deny a warranty claim during the warranty period for an engine or transmission issue.

    Oh look, another mod....
I'm gonna leave this right here, to stir the pot even more. And before you ask, yes, this is my truck. It was a road trip I took from Ft Worth to Austin and 99% of it was highway miles on cruise control set at 65MPH.

I agree getting nearly 24 mpg with 50/50 city highway especially if carrying anything. Thats better than what i'm getting. I'd be lucky to get 22 mpg with a 50/50 mix.

I haven't run any fuel system cleaner in a while, but I've done several very long road trips this year. But changing the air filter made a big difference for me. Probably 1-2 MPG consistently for about 21 MPG at 70 MPH on my commute while still carrying my RTT all year. My tires did cause about a 1 MPG drop from the stock ones. Stock size, but slightly beefier.

I just went with OEM. I ran a K&N on a Mustang back in the day. I found it had slightly more power, but ran worse overall and got worse MPG than stock so these days I just stick to stock.
