Ok guys. I just picked up a near new A.R.E. double cab cap for my Gray Metallic truck today for $200. Yeah, I practically stole the thing. The only problem is that the top is RED. I have no experience with the plasti dip but I see A LOT of threads on it. What are your thoughts on painting the camper top with it?? Would it be better to spend 3-400 bucks to have it painted "right". Would the plasti dip hold up?? I plan to do a little research. Just wanted to get the ball rolling on the subject. ANY help would be great.

I assume it would hold up great if you did it right(good layers)! It's not like it's going to get abused since it's the top of the cap..it won't ever get touched

EDIT: I would pay and get it done "right" if I were gonna have it on all the time..but it's your call! What a steal btw...only 200!

I definitely wouldn't dip it using the rattle cans. It will more than likely come out looking that way! What you could do tho is dip it as a base layer and then cover the dip with whatever color you'd like (color match or black etc). that way its still removable since the actual paint is sticking to the dip.

But with the amount of money you saved buying it you may want to find a place that will do it right and then you don't have to worry about any chips or touch[ups.

    Just my 2 cents

I would do the plasti dip, I think it Will hold up good and look even better, if it does great, if it doesn't oh well u wasted 20-30$ and can Jus peel it off, then do it the right way. I say go for it!!

Ha! So you were "that guy" they mentioned. I think I do remember seeing that they said both were for a short bed online. I had been looking at the top for about a week. Just decided to go ahead and get it because the price was so good.

In the pics I liked the way the red one looked better. I drove 2.5 hrs so I would have been majorly pissed if I wanted the silver one! They had a pic of it on the truck so I knew it was legit.

I wouldn't derp, and I'm a derp fan. There will come a time it will peel and I imagine it will cost more than $20-30 to properly derp the whole thing. Get it done right up front because it will be one of the most visible additions to your truck and you want it to look good without having to go back and patch.

Just paint it, your total investment after the paint job would be at a "typical pricepoint" for a used shell in good condition. But yours will look brand new :D . Derping it would look cheesy

I think Line-X, a spray or roll on bedliner, etc would look pretty cool. Not to mention tough as nails and maybe cheaper.

with any painted surface its all about the preparation. If you spent the time and do the prep right I see no problem in Plasti Dip for saving money.

With a professional job you will get two things.

    - guarantee of craftsmanship.
-Second you will have professional grade products. Such as 2 part Clear Coat's etc. The benefit to a 2 part clear coat is that it cures much faster and resist chips ETC. You will also get a thicker layer of protection.

If it were me just buy some spray on bedliner scuff the cap up real good with a scotch brite pad and spray away. I plasti dipped a lot of stuff on my truck to see if i liked the way it looked black I plan on peeling it off and bedlinered everything. I bedlinered my hood bug deflector a few months ago came out great no chips so far.
