Hey y’all I’ve been trying to figure out this sound for a little bit. My belt is gates and it only has about 30k miles on it so I didn’t think that it would be bad and the cause of it, but maybe I’m wrong. If I spray water with a squirt bottle anywhere on the belt or pulley system when it’s running, the sound stops temporarily but comes back. I just replaced all 3 of my idler pulleys with pulleys that have Japanese koyo bearings but the sound remains. I attached a pic of the belt. I’m not sure if the lines/wear is normal for 30k miles. I’ve taken the belt off and inspected for signs of wear like cracks but haven’t really seen anything significant. I’m uploading a video so y’all can hear it for yourself and possibly be of help to me :) I think my next move is going to be to buy a new belt and hope that solves it.

here is the video I took

Edit: one thing I forgot to add is that it almost seems like the sound has gotten slightly quieter since I added the new pulleys but it is still there. Weird…

I thought that but wouldn’t oil lubricate it if anything?

The leak is also something I’ve been trying to pin point lately.

If that were the case they would sell oiled belts. Find the leak and fix it, then get an OEM belt.

That belt is fu-ked, look at the cracks running along it, it's about to shred itself. The lines look like it's been running on the wrong side of a grooved pulley

I assure you it hasn’t been running on the wrong side. I look at that diagram and make sure I get it right every time I put a belt on

Unfortunately it seems like the leak is the timing chain cover. It seems to be a pretty slow leak though and had gotten on the belt/pulleys over time.

I tried a new belt as well as a pulley for the tensioner. I also cleaned off the pulleys but they didn’t really seem too dirty. Still have the damn sound. It seems to go away after it warms up. My only thought would be maybe the tensioner is putting too little or too much pressure on the belt but it doesn’t really seem like it. It also doesn’t seem to me like that would be the issue if the sound is inconsistent and goes away. Any suggestions or ideas?
