The Texas Medical Association recently published a COVID-19 risk factor chart. They rated various activities from 1 to 10 relating to the risk of being infected. Camping is rated at a #2, Low Risk...!!!!!!!!!!!!! Grocery shopping or getting your hair cut is more of a risk.

The 5,000 mile service interval is only a part of the equation. The Tacoma Warranty and Maintenance Guide clearly indicates that the first service is to occur at 5,000 miles OR 6 months.

I've had my 2020 for five months and just filled the tank for the third time. Soooo ready to break free from this COVID BS... Think I've only got about 1200 miles on the truck.

I would change the oil at least at the 1 year mark. Get rid of the moisture and other contaminates that will be collecting in the oil regardless of how much use you put on it.

If you look at the Warranty and Maintenance Guide it states some Miles or Months.

I am like the OP. I am retired. I drive less than 7K a year (even less since CV19). While the vehicle was under warranty I followed the Warranty guide. imo, short trips is hard on the vehicles fluids.

I have a Nissan. They recommend oil changes every 5k or 6 months. There was many times I hit the time limit way before the miles. That meant 2 oil changes per year, even though I may only have 2-3K on the oil. Some will say that is throwing money away. I say it cheap insurance against the car company turning down a warranty claim because maintenance guidance was not followed.

In the end the vehicle owner needs to do what they are comfortable in doing.

I used up all my free Toyota stuff before I pcsd to Korea, was going to be gone during the 24 month mark so I used it up. They complained but were compliant. Only at 18k in 2.5yrs. Gone 14 months though.

I only put about 4500 miles a year on my truck, but that's because I use my motorcycle as my default transport. The truck gets used to do things that can't (or shouldn't) be done on a bike.

I brought it in for all the Toyota Care stuff while, so I got 2 oil changes and a couple other tire rotations out of it. Now I do my own maintenance.

1.) I would e-mail Toyota and the Dealership where you bought your truck, and ask them.

2.) Print and keep the written replies.

3.) If you ever have to prove what Toyota (or your Dealer) said, if you have a hassle...you'll have proof. That's what a Judge will ask you for (if, Heaven forbid) you ever had to prove anything in a court!

    :)

Got my Tacoma in March of 2016. Just hit 5,424 miles. Manual states 10K miles or 1 year which ever comes first. I have the oil changed every March. Tire rotation every other year or as needed. It could take several years before I hit the 10K mileage. I’m also long retired and don’t drive very often, but when I do, it is like the very first time.

I’m at six hundred some odd miles in six months ... If I had been able to predict the fallout from COVID, I probably wouldn’t have mine. It’s a pretty cool truck though, so I’ll just keep staring at it in the garage

OP, I’d say just take it in at a year for service, else just do it yourself.

You think Toyota will accept that fun fact? Or say something about the manual states ...?

Yep every year sounds right. Only put 3000 miles on mine in 10 months. Daily driver is a 2011 honda accord with about 95k.

Let us know how easy the filter comes off if you do it your self. Changed the oil at 10k in the winter and the filter did not budge.

Okay, but that won't happen until next summer sometime, when I next change my oil & filter.

I can tell you that the plastic filter housing was quite difficult to get spun off. First, it was very tight, and difficult to break loose; and then it was difficult to spin for every revolution, all the way off - almost like the threads were buggered-up or something.
And then the new metal filter housing that I replaced it with spun on very easily, all the way until the rubber o-ring made contact, and then I tightened it with the wrench from there.
So, the metal filter housing was a definite improvement so far; and I have every expectation that it will work equally well in reverse when I take it off for the first time next summer.
But, if there is a problem, you can rest assured that I will report it here next summer.

I have heard of zero issues or complaints regarding this metal filter housing, so I'm not expecting any myself.

I put on between 20-22k a year on mine which results in 4 oil changes. Let me know when one of you Grocery store round trippers wants to sell :D

soooooo I gather, it's 5000mi/6month whichever comes 1st for the 1st dealership inspection? after 4 months we've accumalated <400mi. but starting to use it going to work the past week and now in the future

if we knew of how the Coronavirus would affect everything I think "our" choice would have to wait till 2021 to purchase the Taco. Could have saved up another $5k for the down payment vs. having our 2020 sit in the garage
