don't flame me if this has been asked...

do any 3g owners skip the first non oil related service (one is a 8k kms for checks and another at 16kms for engine oil) and just combine them during the annual oil service? i read through the manual and other than some adjustments and checks, i don't see anything pressing that can't just be combined with the oil; am i missing something here or is this just a light service to get into the dealer? mine's a 6mt so i don;t believe theres any tranny related precautions to heed.

    thanks in advance.

The 1st service is to make sure that everything has made it's way to the proper place after the initial break-in period and all systems are working properly (for safety). Besides, it's free! Why not?!? Better safe than sorry...

thanks tara, but in le canada its not free and it shows as a repeating service. its slotted between the oil service until the service manual hits 200,000kms and then says to repeat from the beginning. its a recurring thing from the looks of it.

At least around here your 6 month 5,000 mile , 18 month 15,000 mile ect. will also in include a free tire rotation so that every 5,000 miles or 6 months you will get a tire rotation. If you are not rotating your own tires every 5,000 miles I recomend that you take it in and let the dealer do it. The service is free around here for the first 2 yrs 24,000 miles.

thanks john. i figured the tire rot was likely the even steven factor on the invoice... but i have jacks and such so i may bypass that first service one altogether and just do the oil every year.

    appreciate the comments again.

I'm with you on this one. There's nothing in the 8000km service that's worth giving money to a dealer. Rotated the tires myself, checked all the fluids and (LMAO) customized my own damn settings.

I think they wanted $49.95 for the service plus another 20 for the system customization plus tax! NO THANKS

I put that money towards things like a decent floor jack, 6 ton axle stands (for the height), grease gun, filter wrench etc so I can do my own maintenance = WIN

You are correct on the standard items, my OR 4X4 came with tow, flaps, sill protectors, auto dimming mirror, rubber mats etc.

    Have a good one,

    Frank

The interval service between oil changes is a sunshine service. The tech opens the hood, lets the sun shine on it a few minutes and you are done. They will rotate the tires also, but there isn't much to check. Oil level, wiper fluid, coolant. Lets not even talk about the tranny fluid here.

Hey bud, also up here in Canada...I told them i wanted the oil done at that first 8k service, just to get all those particles out of there.
The first oil change was on the house, but i purchased an extended warranty and it covers all those regular service costs plus 8 oil changes.
Im pretty sure the only "important" thing on that list is to grease and tighten the propellor shaft, and its an easy diy job. Might as well do it all yourself anyways cuz dealers tend to lie about what theyve done. And even if you dont take it in for those regular services, it wont affect the warranty.

That is what I would do and am planning on just the once a year oil change and I'll take my truck to a tire shop for the rotation every 6K miles. I took my truck in for the 6 month check up and had them check the torque on the rear U-bolts which they said were within 1lb of proper torque. My truck has no grease inserts on the U-joints and I told them not to worry about the tires. So who knows what they done for the 45 minutes they had it. It shows on Toyota's web site they done the things I asked. My main concern was the oil level. I cannot get a accurate reading on the dipstick. Don't know if this is because of the synthetic oil as I'm used to 10W-30 in my previous trucks. Anyhow the service tech assured me the 2.7 Toyota engine does not use oil. I hope he is right.

Oh I think it does use oil....of the synthetic variety...0W-20. I can't seem to get an accurate level on the dip stick either.... I'm gonna remove it overnite and hope all the oil returns to the pan and check it with a clean dry stick in the morning... Seems like the oil stays in the lower end of the tube, or something..??

On my 2006 Taco..the first 2 oil changes at the dealer were well overfilled (alomos 1 liter).... I mentioned it each time and they say that put in the right amount... MY first change was "dead-on" the mark....They just don't know WFT they are doing.

I'm not to the 5k miles point yet but mine will be going in. I plan on making up something to get them to check the transmission fluid manually.
