Oh cool I don't believe I've seen this thread.

About 7 years ago I got the notion I wanted to make tactical gear. I did extensive research on what type of machine, materials, and hardware I would need. I opted to purchase a new Juki DNU-1541S over a used machine. I've spent the last 7 years designing and building tactical gear. I've gotten to the point my skill level allows me to design and build basically whatever I want (including accessories for the Tacoma). I do have some limitation with just the one machine but for the most part they haven't prevented me from building whatever I want. Sewing heavy materials (Cordura, webbing, elastic, etc) is not the same as sewing medium/light weight materials, therefore the techniques are quite different. In my experience I've had to learn via trial and error these techniques as information out there (circa 2012-2014) was very hard to come by, not many people willing to share the knowledge for one reason or another. I'll post some picture of my more interesting builds. Please feel free to ask questions.

    Awesome work @ckrockets !!

I started with tactical gear, never had anything worth showing off. Were you on DIYtactical? I haven't been on there in years. Couldn't really keep making gear cause I was a teenager with my mom's 80s JC Penny sewing machine and it was pulling teeth to get it to go through even 1 layer of fabric and 1 layer of webbing.

Yes that was the one site you could find a little information on, it's gone now. I know a lot of amateur builders got their design ideas pirated from that site, all of a sudden an established gear maker would start integrating the design concept into their products. Very suspicious, it didn't foster an environment open to sharing ideas/techniques, probably why it's gone.

Yeah I had the same issue you touched on. Trying to learn techniques of how to do stuff was difficult considering I started from 0.

You have me lusting after a Juki now. The singer 111 does great but it has its quirks. Do you still have the clutch motor on it? Nice thing about mine is the guy I bought I from put a servo on it so putting 1 or 2 stitches down is pretty easy with the pedal.

This machine is awesome haven't had any problems. Buy once, cry once, you'll never regret it. I bought the machine new complete ready to go from a local dealer (Bill's Sewing Machine Company), which included the table and variable servo motor. It is surprising how slow you can run the machine with just peddle control, makes rounding 90° corners much easier.

I really enjoy designing and build gear, it's just so time consuming, entire weekends go by in a blink of an eye.

Finally get to contribute! I made up a waxed canvas and flannel bag for two canoe paddles. There is cotton flannel separating the paddles from the canvas and from each other. It mounts to the ceiling of my canopy to keep them out of the way. I'm planning on making two more for my wife's and kid's paddles.
