Let me start by saying that I know nothing about car audio stuff, but I'd like to learn so I don't get ripped off.
Now, do the shallow mount subs need less space inside the box?? Should the box be ported??

    Thanks

Depends on the sub. You don't always need shallow, it just depends on what you are trying to accomplish.

Shallow subs take about the same airspace as fullsize, depending on the sub. I have the Alpine Type R shallow 12 and its in a 1.75ft box, ported at 32hz and sounds amazing. In a sealed box a .60 it sounded like shit.

Depends. A JL Audio 10TW-3 is a great sub, and sounds great in a .75 sealed box. It only needs 3.25" of mounting space under the flange.

As for porting, consult the manufacturer.

What are you trying to accomplish?

Around the beginning of the year, Sundown is coming up with an "SQ" oriented (as in not just for decibels) somewhat shallow sub that's a revision to their SD-2 line up.. SD-3. While the SD-2 is a good line up, they're improving it significantly. Operates in a .5cf enclosure. I'll probably get one in 10".. Maybe 2.. One for car and one for the taco. Mounting depth 4.48"!

The Sd-3 is not a bad sub at all, my only issue is the price category they are in and generally what people are willing to pay for such items
I keep a close eye out on Sundown and have good business relations with them.

imo the 6.5s are only worth getting if you really can't fit an 8 or 10. The cone area required to catch up to the response and relative decibels ud need a few and then it defeats the purpose of having them.

These 6.5s are nice for those builds where one simply cannot make anything ells fit.

Thanks for the info. I'm really unsure of which way I want to go. Since I have a regular cab, I'd like to take up as little space as possible behind the seat. I am now leaning to putting two 6.5s behind the seat, but I've got to figure out which ones will produce good base.
If y'all have any suggestions, I'm all ears. I will keep the factory Entune and run a Alpine PowerPack which only puts out 45Wx4.

Mercury has subs but to ship subs direct is more costly in a small quantity.
I am mostly in love with the mercury mids and amps, not to take away from their subs.
The shok triton series is our SQL low Wattage sub that does great on 500wrms all the way up to 1500wrms in the right setup. I have no doubt in my mind that if your after subs that will fit the bill and space that they are it. They very musical subs, Tight response and really does a good job at reproducing sound the way its suppose to.

Richard wrote a small review on his 12s not long ago ( has 2 in a double cab on 12xx WRMS)
    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/audio-video/352179-shok-triton-12-subs.html
IF you want, drop him a msg and ask him about his experience with them. If these little monsters are what your looking for let me know.

Yeah, when it comes to the Mercurys, I was thinking more about mids in 6.5 and tweeters for the front doors. Can you get those?? If so shoot me a PM with price and timeline.

as long as your not a total bass freak you can slide a focal sub amp combo right under the passenger seat. its only an 8" sub but it get the job done as best an 8" sub can. neat, compact, and you lose ZERO usable space in a place where space is at a premium

i might be selling mine but i have no idea what its worth. i used it for a while then installed a 10" sub on the rear shelf.

    Just getting started
737 - Would I need an amp or anything else to run Focal or is it pretty much a 'plug and play' deal. My '14 stock system is just OK and it will have to do until I have more disposable cash (kid in College now). If you do sell your unit, let me know what you want for it.

that particular set up is the sub and the 75w (150w peak) amp all that enclosure. so the pre-amp wires go directly to that unit and thats it.

this thread made me think about the ibus sitting in my closet and the fact i hadnt used it in over a year, i put it up in the for sale section shortly after. i ran it in my truck for about a month or so.

What prompted me to change set ups was when my gf was riding in the passenger seat she wasnt 'comfortable' lol. I even tried turning it all the way down she still felt it. they arent cheap but they work well while preserving precious space. you can google them and check out the specs, search for Focal iBus 20.

Pulled the trigger on a Sundown SD-3 10". Contemplating about a .5cf if possible custom box in place of the center console between the flip-down rear seats in my Access Cab. I suspect in the little access cab space, it'll be outrageous, while outrageously clean, I hope. :) Access cabs I've found present quite a space challenge for such.

Thinking a custom box, similar but different such as this one at the bottom of post 1. May go direct firing though from the front of the box, so to get the box up against the back instead of taking any floor area. Utilizing the shallow 4.45" mounting depth.

Mr Fedex man brought me a goodie!
4.45" depth. Roughly 2" total throw. I suspect this little guy will rock the Tacoma.
