I got them for the fire because i would always burn my hands trying to use my tongs to move logs and then it became a no brainer for the cast iron. They are the cheap ones and you can't hold stuff for long, i think some better quality ones might reduce that.

The list below a summation of things I forgot when I use to go big. Almost fifty years of things I forgot, then added to the list. Most important piece of camping equipment? A small spiral-bound notebook and pen always within arms reach, to write down RIGHT THEN what you forgot. Add it to the list when you get home. I still keep multiple notebooks around: in truck, on camp table, in pantry container, in the tent by my bed, in the boat, and now, in the hammock.
After fifty years I found that you don't need all this crap. I sleep in a hammock and go minimalist. MUCH easier to pack to go, and to clean up and prepare for the next trip when you get home. To each their own:

We wrap potatoes in tin foil and cook in the coal/next to the fire. Make extra and home fries with them the next morning in the cast iron after cooking some bacon.

This is just a part of the planning sheet my Fiancee and I put together for our most recent trip to the grand canyon. A lot of it can be made before hand at home and frozen. Only a handful of things that we ate had to be prepped fresh on site.

We got tired of leaking zip locks so bought one of those seal-a-meal vacuum appliance. Cook stews and chili ahead of time and seal in a bag and freeze overnight before putting in bottom of ice chest, no more episodes with a leaking bag. Or just season and cook the stew meat ahead of time and mix into a dried soup mix. For starch we usually use boil in bag rice.

We did the pre-scrambled eggs in a water bottle last trip and worked out really well.
Of course we had them with bacon, pre portioned out and vacuumed sealed. As for the bacon fat, mop up with a paper towel and save for later to use as a fire starter.

Older you wants a word with you:

Damn, where did the time go? It sucks being a twenty-two year old trapped in this sixty-three year old body. And what is up with all these young punks (get over it. EVERYBODY is a young punk when you're 63 and pissed off about it, just wait...you'll see! ;)) thinking its weird that I still listen to Seether and Breaking Benjamin? When did camping and fishing get to be this tiring? I'm EXHAUSTED at the end of the day. Hell, I'm exhausted when I get up! Going camping is a bigger chore now. These new aches and pains make it less fun. What ever happened to me fishing all day, then grilling red snapper over a bed of hot mesquite coals, then partying all night? And cooking a spread of hashbrowns/bacon/eggs/bisquits before dawn? And I never blacken crappie in the boat for lunch anymore. WTF happened to me? Now, I just pull through Jack in the Box on the way and pick up twelve Super Tacos and six Breakfast Jacks and put them in ziplocks and pull them out and heat them on foil over the Jetboil. (Glad I remembered to clean them out on Taco sauce.) Spoiling myself now consists of a day-old Whataburger for lunch. And exactly when did a Spam Spread fold-over start tasting so good? All I want to do now when I go camping is wolf something down that is quick and convenient and get in that hammock and sleep. I'm too old and too damn tired to try anymo…LOOK! I got a bite!

Wow. The amount of organization and planning with that spreadsheet is impressive

At first we used to not plan as much as you see here when we started dating, but over time, we've been camping more and more and we're both fairly (meaning more her than me) organized and to keep track of everything especially when camping for multiple days, you have to plan a lot more than usual.

This is only one of eight spread sheets for this trip.
