Bah maybe I'm just getting soft, but shit like this is really getting under my skin lately. I'm not a hippie since I don't mind fishing and hunting, but killing animals for no reason is starting to piss me off. Especially when it feels like I can't make any difference...

I purposely avoid stories that involve it. This is the only topic I ever get worked up over.

Killing exotic animals for food is pointless, in my opinion. It's purely to make money. I'm perfectly fine not eating shark, whale, etc...

Killing and eating deer during deer season is acceptable, as most of the time the deer are overpopulating the area and it's a necessary evil. Sharks are most definitely not overpopulating the ocean.

I also have to try very hard to hold myself back when I see/hear people talk about wearing a real fur coat. That's one of the most ignorant things to me. If my girlfriend and I are out shopping and we end up walking in a store with real fur, she immediately turns us around as she knows I am going to make everybody in there feel extremely awkward.

    That's just my $.02, though.

You are absolutely correct, and I used exotic on purpose.

Exotic animals become endangered animals for a reason, and it's certainly not because they are killing each other. :p

Agreed with what he said...shark is ok as long as it isn't endangered, or "finned" in which case they only cut the fins off and throw the shark back. I don't support that at all. I feel fine with keeping fish every now and then when I catch them, but I do it only when I plan to eat them that night. So I'll only keep one redfish or a few flounder at best. The fact is, the commercial fisherman are the ones who are ruining fish numbers by using nets...and it affects the recreational fisherman in the end.

Hunting, different story...I don't participate in it partly because the style isn't to my liking, but my dad hunts and I support him in doing so. He spends a ton of money which helps to manage the areas he hunts, and I know he won't risk a shot that will only wound an animal. And venison tastes amazing, so I always snag some meat from his freezer. My only problem with hunting animals are when it's for sport or bragging rights...that's simple douchebag-ism at its finest. I just vented to some bitch on my FB because she posted a pic of a raccoon she shot while hunting "out of boredom." Fuck that...

You are right, I cannot say with certainty that is not the reason.

But humans feeling righteous has a larger impact, at least from the studies I have read.

Either way, I'm not telling anybody how to live. I just personally try not to pay money for anything that would contribute to the degradation of wildlife. Although, I'm sure there are things I do/buy that somehow do contribute to it without me even knowing it.

I don't personally hunt, but I am ok with it for the most part - mainly due to overpopulation and the like.

I turn into a real asshole when people I know start arguing with me in person about stuff like that. Or I happen to hear somebody talking about in public; however, I try my best not to as I know me bitching to people isn't going to solve anything.

That guy Cody on Dual Survival always cracks me up with his not-wearing-shoes theory, but I loved this quote: "I think a lot more people would be vegetarians if they had to kill their own meat. ..."

    It's pretty damn true.

That show is hilarious - just the dynamic between the two guys. It's more of a reality show than a survival show at times.

Cody really does have some good points on preservation, etc...

The deer would argue that the humans are the ones doing the over-populating.

I do agree with you, but I try my best not to get involved in that argument.

Fact is, if humans were not here, animals would have free reign to go wherever they want and populate any area they want.

The only time there is conflict is when humans encroach on the animal's territory. Which is every day of our lives.

Just this morning a squirrel ran into the 7-Eleven I go to a lot, and the clerk was yelling for somebody to kill it. I just walked over with a Styrofoam cooler and coaxed him into it and then let him go in the grass in the back of the building. The majority of us are way too quick-triggered.

I've been diving w/ Great Whites in Africa a number of times (hell, my sig is from that), and they're nothing more than an animal in it's habitat doing what nature told them: swim, eat, reproduce. Kind of like us.

Wrong cow or chicken crosses a human's path, and they end up as food. Nothing more. Are these "rogue" humans?

Sorry to the guy's family, but natural selection weeds out the stupid. This guy should've known better. Makes me sick to kill this beautiful creature.

Ha, funny part is I agree with you...we are overpopulating (at least it seems that way). Or maybe it's more accurate to say we're over-developing. I really have no intentions to have kids and I wish more people would learn to wrap it up instead of popping more kids out than they can afford or raise. But that's a whole different topic :D
