If this is not done, there is a risk of moving parts not staying lubricated.

    Actually quite often.

Here in Michigan we can have xway drifted with a small amount of snow, then dry pavement for for a couple miles.

It's a pain in the ass dropping down to under 60 to engage or disengage the the 4wd. Just leave it in 4wd and not worry about it if you need to be in 4wd.

My bad, let me explain it for you… I drive 5-10 miles to exercise the ring gear, pinion gear, pinion bearings, carrier bearings, CV axles (with load besides just spinning), front driveshaft, associated transfer case parts AND the actuators + solenoids. In addition I want to get some heat in the front diff to help remove water contamination.

Incorrect. This topic has been beaten to death on other threads. :deadhorse: Binding becomes an issue when you have four wheel drive engaged and you turn sharp enough to create a situation where the wheels are turning different speeds (inside vs outside tires, front tires vs rear tires). The Tacoma does not need slippage to prevent the system from binding at all times. It is only when you introduce conditions that will create binding (turning beyond a certain angle).

How do you meet the ten miles/month requirement for the 4Hi Lubrication without driving on a straight road?

This. I'm guilty of this in winter. Put it in 4H on some snowy roads and then turn into a plowed carpark only to realize "fuck, I'm still in 4H".

Seems like every one of these threads goes the same way:
-don't use it at all/have problems
    -use it enough/no problems
-use it more than enough/have problems

Whats the solution? Just use it when you need it.
What if you don't need it 10 miles per month? Maybe don't use it that month.
What if you don't need it 10 miles per year? Maybe don't use it that year.
What if you don't need it 10 miles per lifetime? Maybe don't use it that lifetime.
What if you never used it and then got into a situation where you actually needed it, and now it doesn't work? Call a tow truck.

OP - you've ruined your truck. Let me know where you live and I'll tow it away for free. :D

    ^This guy off roads ^

I wheeled a built rock crawling jeep in Moab for 18 years. I've seen every make and model 4x4 on some of the hardest trails around. I've also see much mechanical carnage, but there is a common theme to broken rigs, idiot drivers and poorly maintained trail beaters. Moab is an amazing place and while they call the rock "slick rock" it is actually like driving on 30 grit sand paper. I've never seen a well maintained vehicle break anything drive train related by making a turn on the slick rock. The tires will chirp and complain, but nothing breaks. The way to break things is to give it the gas, get one wheel in the air spinning fast, then have the rig fall down onto that spinning wheel. The energy has to go somewhere and stuff breaks.

So what does all that have to do with driving in 4wd on the streets. Well, it's really not much different than driving on a Moab trail in 4wd. The "delicate flower" group isn't wrong, but they make it seem like carnage will happen if you drive 15 feet. I suspect that driving thousands of miles in 4wd would wear the tires out faster, but I wouldn't be too worried about the drive train. So OP, as much as I'd like a new Tacoma you have 1,000% done no harm.

The amount of times I've slipped down a ledge in 4WD and caught traction in the front wheels as I landed and thought "welp, better get that spare CV out" only for everything to be totally fine suggests this is probably a reasonable line of thinking.

You should definitely avoid doing that, but in theory, the tires end up doing the slipping. If they don't, something will bind and break.

You should read the manual. You don't want to be stationary in neutral to switch to 4HI, you want to be in drive and rolling.

    https://assets.sia.toyota.com/publi...Z*MTY5MDM4ODA4NC4xLjEuMTY5MDM4ODExNy4yNy4wLjA.

Page 303. Pages 304 and 305 have some troubleshooting for your issues though I'm sure the 4HI issue is not being in drive while rolling for the gears to align.

    TLDR: Driving in 2WD -> 4HI -> stop -> neutral -> 4LO.

I miss this bad boy. 2014 GX460, with Wildpeaks. That 4.6 V8 was a good motor. I used to watch jeeps breakdown left and right in the NJ pine barons…. lol.

Soon the new Tacoma will get a workout as well. Agreed about trying to find some gravel or dirt to give the 4wd a workout.

I've seen enough videos of how people use their 4wd drive systems offroad. Driving moderately on dry pavement isn't going to hurt anything. I usually use slow-and-go type of traffic to get my couple miles of 4wd in per month.

I just flip mine to 4hi on occasion in summer to go up my very short dirt road and stone driveway all on a decent hill and about 150-200 yards. The turn from road to driveway is 90 degrees. It doesn’t bitch. At the top I’ll turn again but go back to 2wd to back into shed. Required lubrication for winter.
My old Silverado had the AWD switch. That option I will miss for all the reasons discussed here.
