Hey guys. So I'm wanting to change my own oil but I'm afraid the dimwits at the dealer might void my warranty if some sort of problem comes up. When I change the filter I'm going to replace it with the trd filter with the metal endcaps and I want to mark the date of the oil/filter change on the metal part as proof that it was replaced at the correct interval. Would sharpie hold up to the conditions the filter would be subjected to or is there another marking tool you all would recommend?

I keep all receipts and take a picture of the old and new 'marked' filters with the odometer. I keep all the old filters in a plastic tub.

I use the black OEM Toyota filters and I always mark the date on the top of the filter with a black sharpie and it holds up. mainly as a reminder for myself

Marking the date on the filter housing isn't going to prove anything. Do like what was already said, keep you receipts for the oil and filter.

I'm not going to be marking the housing. I will be marking the filter itself which is why I ask if sharpie will hold up to being exposed to hot, high pressure oil. The trd filters have metal endcaps which make for a good surface to mark on. That is if the ink will stay on.

Try using a paint-pen, I use a white one and it stays on no problem. I have been using a paint-pen for the last 4 oil changes: I mark the date and mileage it was swapped

You don’t need to run any specific brand of oil or filter as long as it is the correct filter size and proper oil weight... Not running Toyota branded stuff isn’t going to void anything.

I mark my filters with sharpie, date and mileage and it’s good to go.

Absolute waste, even if something happens you can't prove the filters came from the engine.

No, but the pictures of the old and new 'marked' filters do.
They're just filters; not like I'm keeping the oil too.

On my 1st and 2nd Gens I used to use a paint marker on the filter to mark the date and mileage, this truck I just take a pic during my changes.

The only real reason I buy Toyota filter elements is they are 8 bucks (CAD) and the dealer even throws in a oil pan plug gasket lol.

    The box even has pictures!

Like a few others above, I use a silver Sharpie to mark my filter with the date/mileage.

Marking something like the filter/housing is fine if that's the reminder you want for yourself.

None of the items mentioned here, including receipts, photos and old parts, would 'prove' a thing related to having changed your oil on proper intervals, any more than simply recording it in a paper or excel log book of some type.

Paint pen. I would also mark nuts to bolts with a line, so I could visually see if something was loosening. such as bumper mounts, UCA bolts, etc

Guys...the 3rd Gen Taco uses a filter element inside a housing. The same as my 2010 FJ Cruiser. And the housing is black. I don't see what you'll mark and have it readable.

If you are concerned, keep receipts for the filter and oil as well as keep a log. This approach would be much more effective.

    White or silver paint pen.

However, I agree it's a waste of time.

Just keep your receipts and write the service info in to the owners section of toyota.com. I put all the info in there include brands and part numbers used so it can match the receipts.
