If only I had gone to the dealership each time for a warranty claim and "worded correctly" some of the parts I've broken or had to replace because I used my 4x4 while on the trail, because that's the purpose of 4x4 :jerkoff:

Unless I'm missing something I don't see why it wouldn't be covered under warranty. I can't see anything the OP did that was abusive. The truck is 4X4 and he was apparently using 4X4 in order to drive in snow when something broke. Having wheels spin in poor traction is just part of it. Happens all the time and I've never broken anything.

I am not saying it is anybody's fault one way or the other. I was just wondering if people thought it would be covered by warranty. You can't say that it never happens, it might be extremely unlikely. No manufacturer, even Toyota, can manufacture 100% flawless products.

stock tires, stock suspension, your not wheeling very hard.
Surprised the CV broke instead of your tires just spinning in the snow.

I've seen CVs break on 33s. Not that far fetched that they could break on stock size tires. If you are just spinning tires, no fucks given and they grab on to something you can kiss that CV good bye.

Applying the brakes causing a failure? Seriously doubt it.

"Hi Toyota. So, on Thursday I was driving through a snowstorm on the way to work. The city hadn't plowed 8th Street yet (public road) and I got stuck in the snow. Engaged 4x4 and tried to get through. Heard a bang. Got towed out and to a shop and they said my CV broke.

Can you fix this under warranty?

    Awesome, thanks."

By any chance were your wheels turned all the way one way or the other? I have foumd that the weakest time with a CV joint is at full turn causing a bind of the joint. Not saying that was the problem but just curious.

What happens to the CVs when slamming on the brakes and having the antilock action attacking them . I would think that would be just as bad for the CV's .

Also for anybody curious the tow from the third party shop to the dealer was covered by Toyota Care with very little hassle, so I definitely appreciate you guys motivating me to having it sent there. While the truck is there I am gonna have the 25,000 mile service done anyways.

Toyota says there are 'extrusion marks' and signs of 'rough use' and therefore the truck is not covered. I asked if they are near/related to the CV or if that was just general signs and the shop CS rep didn't know. I reiterated the fact that all four wheels were in the snow and that that wheel never reached the ground so I have no idea how the snow could have possibly put 'extrusion marks' anywhere on the truck. She basically just listened nicely and told me there is nothing they can do. They are also saying that they can't even roll the truck into the shop now, which i don't understand because it rolled fine onto the tow truck. She seems to think that there is something more extensively wrong. I wish I had taken pictures of the truck when it was stuck, but even if I had it seems as though these markings would have screwed me anyway. I guess I won't drive in snow anymore?

That's a bunch of BS! Tell them you are starting a claim with Toyota Corporate.

For real tho how would was I actually supposed to handle this situation? I didn't do anything that I hadn't done in my (granted far less powerful) 91 corolla. Also they aren't saying operator error they are claiming external forces, which I firmly deny had any part in this.

Can they define what they are calling an extrusion mark and show where they are at?

I haven't read the whole thread but did you have traction when you put it in 4wd? Never want to engage 4hi if the tires are slipping/spinning, good way to break a CV

I blew an OEM CV on an icy road up in Big Bear a few weeks ago on 32" tires, lol. Still not sure exactly why that happened but they were used CVs I picked up from someone on here, so who knows what they had been put through previously.

@Freekman if they aren't going to cover it, just tell them you want your truck back and replace the CV yourself if you're willing to...it's really not that hard to do. A shop will charge a lot for it and it's something that can be done in under an hour at home with mostly normal tools (need a 35mm axle nut socket and torque wrench).

Swapping out a CV shaft is to easy, and there are a few how to's to follow here at TW. There's a dude who has a buckets full of brand new OEM complete CV's for 150 bucks each in San Diego. I got one off of him a few months ago when I sheared my aftermarket halfshaft and cracked the outer bell.
