im buying a shell from a buddy for 25 bucks, its off an older model pick up and fits my truck i think but does not have a third brake light, does anyone know if its required to have one and if so if its feasible to add one without it looking like crap.

I don't know if it is required but I've used a motorcycle tail light I bought on eBay as a third brake light on my golfcart and it worked out really well. It's just an adhesive strip with red LEDs. You could try something like that until you make a decision on a permanent solution.
