Happy New Year Tacomites!! I am looking for a camper shell that can handle something like a Roofnest Sparrow RTT. I was looking at the Leer 100XT but was told by the local retailer that this shell was only rated for 200-pounds and may not be able to handle the weight. FWIW the Sparrow is listed at 130-pounds.

    Any suggestions? TIA!!

    That’s 200 pounds dynamic (moving)

Normally it’s near impossible to find a static (not moving) weight capacity listed anywhere.

I have had the same concerns and searched high and low and found basically zero instances of a shell getting damaged from a rooftop tent.

now if you were looking at something like the ikamper that holds 4 people, and you were a bigger guy and your wife was a bigger lady and your kids were sleeping up there too, I’d have some concerns. That’s a lot of weight at that point.

I may have found the best option. A Snugtop Hi-Liner with Sportsman's option (reinforced sides and corners) supposedly is rated for 500-pounds.

They’re great caps! I don’t have any distributors down in the south where I’m at do I couldn’t get one.

And again, that 500 pounds will be the dynamic rating. So plenty of capacity when you’re parked

I’m looking at the same thing you’re looking at. A cap that will hold a RTT. There are many that list the dynamic weight, the one listed above - as well as A.R.E. HD versions with a dynamite weight of 550 lbs. I have no idea of any manufacturers listing the static weight limits. I would assume, and it’s only an assumption that the statice weight limits are a good bit higher.

I’m looking for a hard shell RTT that is larger than a 2 person tent. Those are all longer than the short bed that I have, so that is a challenge as well. Looking for a good rack system that’l handle that overhang onto the cab area too.

A rtt i never use and 30 light bars
I sleep in my shell. But if you want a shell and a rtt I would get a ladder rack.

I dont have one, but ik the shell dealers work with a 3rd party or know someone who makes em or just get a fabricator to make you one.
