If they replaced your whole diff, they replaced the gasket where the brakeline goes into the brake drums.

Thats whats questionable. They let me know it was $1600 of work, but did not admit the diff was replaced.

The diff wasn't replaced. To disassemble the carrier, the whole solid rear axle came down so they had to remove the brake lines.

Makes more sense. Definitely looks like my original differential based on all the grease stains. Imma have to degrease and power wash this thing to check for future leaks.

Seriously? If that's how they're doing it, they're going about it the hard way.

On these Toyota 3rds you just have to unbolt the drive shaft and pull each axle out about two inches before removing the 10 or so little bolts that hold the 3rd in place. I don't think I've ever had to remove the brake lines since the axles only have to come out a few inches.

I may be mistaken, just going off what was described to me. In either case, the seal isn't indicative of a diff replacement

I wasn't calling you out or anything. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Toyota went about it the hard way or at least led you to believe they did.

That gasket in question goes between the brake drum and the axle flange. It keeps the drum from rusting onto the axle over time.

It just indicates that the mechanic who did the work was conscientious and replaced them when he had the drums off.

Honestly its a pretty good dealership. I don't hold them accountable for what happened, this is all on corporate.

Absolutely. I forgot how heavy this thing drives after having that Rav4 for so long. Its not a big truck, but its a bit of a beast comparatively.
