you have to remember the new generation of vehicles are built like a Saturn, made out of styrofoam and expected to be disposable. Nobody wants these same vehicles on the road 20 years later or else the engineer didn’t do a good enough job. The truck needs to have just enough degradation to warrant an upgrade but not a law suit, hence the core support dilemma. It’s a fine line and I’d say they’ve cheaped out just enough to reach their end goal.

I think part of it too is nowadays vehicles are designed to completely crumple in an accident in an effort to maximize occupant safety (which is proven very effective). That also means vehicles will live a shorter life and simply aren't expected to last 20-30 years because the likelihood of them being totaled before then is pretty high.

sadly yes that’s also a factor. Personally I’d rather lose my teeth on the steering wheel and keep driving my favorite car. Maybe I’m the minority here though.

I would say you're in the minority. My health comes above any material object (he says as he's drinking a soda at 9:30 am).

As someone who's had the imprint of.a steering wheel on their chest and pulled glass from my forehead I'll take crumple zones in a daily. I say that as I don't have any front bumper, truck is lifted on 35s and heavily modified........

I would say it would be cool to see manufacturers make "performance" enhanced vehicles that did away a lot with the crumple.zones and stuff as an option for those that are pure enthusiasts but that's less than .1% of sales so it ain't gonna happen

What would I weigh? There’s nothing to weigh if there’s nothing extra there.

anything is replaceable, including teeth. The whole reason pickups became glorified minivans is because of folks that used them as trucks being the minority. I’m not going to let me be a statistic for why manufacturers cater to the weak and uninitiated.

sure I’ve been in a few accidents myself, and while I agree to an extent, there are ways to modify the crumple zones without destroying the off-road capabilities. Now will Toyota ever pursue that? Likely not. Time and money play a big factor into production vehicles, both of which they don’t have to be able to move the crumple zone out and keep the core support in tact.

    axle weight at each tire.

What? No, not anything is replaceable when it comes to the human body.

    Health/safety > a truck

This is getting way off topic from some cracked sheet metal.

we may agree to disagree there. Minus the vital organs the human body can be fabricated.

This is true to some extent, modern medicine and science is amazing. But I’ll take my OEM organs and limbs thank you very much.

True and not true. I'm going get a plastic valve put in my heart at some point and I've got all sorts of metals holding parts together.

I don’t think there’s a direct connection between unsprung weight like heavier tires and wheels to a cracked core support. Yes, adding weight like a larger batter will add stress, but other weight, in and of itself isn’t related.

Are we thinking it’s limited to model years? I have 2010 and lots of extra weight with no cracking. Maybe my theory is out to lunch.

I’ve noticed it’s less about weight and more about driving style. I noticed my first cracks after I flew up a bumpy fire road.

I think it's more to do with how twisted you get and crazy shit you do. I know 3rd gens and late 2nds with the issues.

Agreed. Just so happens that guys who add weight in armor also tend to wheel harder. Correlation but not causation.
