I'm also experiencing the same issue with my 2017. It started doing it at about 800 miles (currently 1400) it only does It when going from 2nd into 3rd. Slips for about a second and then finds 3rd and then its fine from there on out.

I too have this 3rd to 4th shift flare.

Originally a while back I was calling it a "slip" of about 500 rpm. Based on that it was authorized to check the transmission fluid level, and it was found to be low 0.5 - 1.0 quart.
Mainly the slip was when reversing up an incline and then going forward I would get slip in between gears. The was from a cold or barley lukewarm engine.

In the meantime I have had the T-SB-0077-16 Shift Feeling Enhancements done.

Currently the slip or shift flare is on a cold start or barley lukewarm. It is between 3rd and 4th gear and under a very light throttle input. The flare is around 300 - 500 rpm.
It only happens during the first 3rd to 4th gear change, then it seems fine til the next time it's cold or lukewarm.

I am going to have the dealership look at this again while there are looking at other issues very soon.

The shift flare is common in cars and trucks outfitted with the Aisin automatic transmission so it's not so much a Toyota thing but an Aisin thing that need to be corrected. The most common cause of flare is due to improperly seating valve bodies so the transmission fluid bleeds through until it expands as it heats up causing the valves to seat better. Most reports state the flare happens once or twice in the morning when the engine is cold. Some are reporting more instances even after the fluid reaches temp, that may be indeed due to low fluid or a faulty transmission with actual gear slip. Those that have that need to get their fluid levels checked immediately. Even if you're not comfortable with the level of your fluid, get it checked.

Flare has also been reported on the 2nd Gen with the Aisin 5 speed installed but we haven't heard of any of them failing specifically due to shift flare. The aftermarket has released a kit for the Aisin 5 speed for the 2nd Gen and those that have installed it have reported no more flare. Unless they release a kit for the 3rd gen to install like Sonnax did for the 2nd gen you will probably continue to have the symptom.

A software patch can't fix a valve seat issue but it may mask the symptom so it's not noticeable. As far as I know the current TSB patches were not made to address shift flare.

Like I asked earlier, I know some of you don't like the symptom but does anyone know of it leading to an actual transmission failure in a Toyota either 2nd or 3rd gen.

As it stands it will likely remain as an annoyance you'll have to learn to live with. If it doesn't expedite a failure I wouldn't expect Toyota to really push Aisin to correct it.

Talked to them today. They had ordered the plugs for front swing arms as well. Taking in tomorrow and leaving all week while I am on Vacation with the family. Doubt anything will change based on what I have read here but I guess it will at least be documented.

There is two different calibration id's available for the transmission concerns. T-SB-0077-16 Rev1 July 14, 2016 ECM Calibration: Shift Feeling Enhancements and T-SB-0079-15 September 17, 2015 Intermittent 2nd - 3rd Up Shift Flare each with their own ecm update id.

0079 is for the 4 cylinder, not applicable to the V6. 0077 rev1 dated 14 July didn't have a calibration ID listed, it said TBD on the notice I saw unless they finally released a patch in the last week or so.

my bad your right, I must have glazed over the statement about it only being for the 2TR. Here is the calibration id for 0077: 8966304B0300 & 896650401300

B0300 is the latest that addresses erratic shifting and the 3 to 4 shift flare. B0200 addresses the p to D delay and a couple small issues.

Couldn't this small flare be the transmission downshifting. Could this be the tramissions essentially heal/toeing?

I haven't had this problem and get see too much in your video.

It is not. It is the valve body's latency of the 4th gear apply pressure.

I had rev 1 of the TSB applied a couple hours ago. I'll post up first thing in the morning about the flare.

Overall the shifting is smoother so it did something.

If anything the TSB may mask the symptom.

I had the shift flare TSB done today - I'll check tomorrow morning to see if it helped.
