Wondering if anyone knows the name or part # of the part on the gear shifter that tells you what gear your in for a 2010 tacoma atm? The black paint on mine is chipping off to the point that only the P,R,N,D & 4 is showing. Not too mention it's extremely bright at night. Cant find the actual name, part # or where to buy one anywhere.

Naturally! And of course I have to be one of "those people" who likes to keep everything about their taco pristine! Thank you for the response TnShooter!

You might get creative and fix it yourself?
I’d probably start with disassembling the console, popping the display cover off and “painting” it.

Ok, I’m lying. I’d just tape over the whole damn thing with black electrical tape and use the dash indicator. Yeah, I’m unmotivated and lazy like that:eek:

Well played sir, well played! I'm probably just gonna find something to cover it up. I mean, I'm good at fixing mechanical issues on my taco myself, but cosmetic fixes....well, that's a different story.

It's sold separately, in fact, it's not included if you buy the shifter assembly.

If you know someone that has a Cricut machine, I'd try to dissemble it to get to the part that has the lettering, and have new lettering cut from the vinyl those machines use and cover the OEM lettering.

I can confirm this above as well. My shift-indicator window was in the same condition when I got my truck with the light leaking through it and just looked terrible overall: like something spilled on it and damaged the plastic. (despite having an extremely clean interior elsewhere.) I searched high and low in the parts websites and just about everywhere else hoping find to just the square snap-off piece with the window that covers the lamp. No luck, and I came to be convinced it was all-or nothing to get that piece. It's such an expensive part I didn't even save the part number. (which I always do for obscure parts I have found for reference in the future and have a list of about 300 of them.) I finally found one in a local pick-and-pull. They had one 2nd gen Tacoma in the yard and when I located the truck it was a total wreck: long past "picked clean". I looked inside and the silver cover around the transmission lever was still there. Amazingly, it was in excellent shape.

I removed the silver trans shift cover and popped off the black plastic piece underneath with the window and drove home a very happy Tacoma owner. I left the rest the lower unit for someone else, knowing the crazy price Toyota is asking for it and because I didn't really need it.

Don't beat yourself up. I'm the same way and there's lots of other folks out that are too. I got it from my Dad. He had many antique vehicles over the years and if they weren't museum pieces when he got them, they were when he completed them. Even his everyday cars looked like they just came out of the factory. I'm pretty out of control when it comes to keeping my vehicles "stock" and using OEM parts: It's not my fault: It's a sickness. :der: ;)

See my earlier post. It is available separately for your truck. It’s like $40.

Fantastic! Thanks!! Missed that. I'm getting old I guess. I hit a cee-ment wall in the searches I was doing when they pointed to that $900 gizmo. $55 bucks sure beats that!! This is why this forum stands above everything else out there. This calls for a reciprocal payback. Here you go. (If you don't need it now because one or both are missing, like mine were when I bought the truck) someday you probably will.
