I'm new to the forum, where I learned the cause of my problem with a wiggly shifter on my 2001 Tacoma 4x4 with 250K miles. I then had the bushings replaced at a repair shop and now the shifter is firm but the entire truck shimmies, even when sitting still. It's also noticeable under power, almost like the engine itself is out of time, though the engine was fine before and wasn't part of the repair. I'm thinking that in tightening the shifter the movement may have been transferred back to the drivetrain itself, but that's just speculation. Anyone experienced this or have ideas about it? The shaking is so pronounced that it seems likely to cause damage elsewhere. I have not yet returned to the repair shop because I'd like to be armed with a little more knowledge beforehand. Thanks!

It sounds like a driveshaft that's been reinstalled wrong... but the problem with that is they shouldn't have removed the transmission to fix the shifter, you can do all that from the top

Do you know if they took the transmission out of the truck?

Thanks for responding. They did not take the transmission out, everything was done from the top. The only other thing they did was change the oil. I called them and they said it was misfiring and that was the source of the shaking. It definitely wasn't doing that before I took it in for the bushing repair, but it does seem to run a bit unevenly, much more so when you put it in gear, and the whole truck starts to shake with speed. I suppose it's possible that it coincidentally developed a misfire while in the shop, but it seemed logical to think it was related to the work done.

I'd check your engine bay. They might of knocked something loose. A connector? Anything I can do on my own this is why I do it. Now you are chasing gremlins that you didn't make. Sucks. Hopefully you figure it out.

That's good advice, I appreciate it. I doubt they did anything intentionally but it's possible a spark plug wire got knocked loose.
