that sounds pretty effed up.. have you tried taking apart the center console and see if the graphical decals are displaced?

What you're saying makes no sense, there are 3 indents to travel from P to D.. Starting from P - go down one indent for R, one more indent for N, and one additional indent for D.. How does it land on N on the 3rd indent? Does the marking show P when the tranny is in P?

the shifter clicks into the gears fine...its the little red mark that does't line up...if its in park it reads park...reverse reads reverse...when i click down to neutral...the mark reads reverse...if i click it down to drive...its reads neutral...is that clear as mud for u

This has been a great post to read. I bought my truck second hand and have been trying to attribute the "thump and go" to something that the previous owner may have done.

I too have an alignment issue with my shifter indicator.
mine is at worst half a window out. (when in drive it shows half neutral half drive.)

I haven't looked into it too much but from what i have spotted i think there is a turnbuckle that will adjust the "throw" of the indicator window.

Let me know if you have any luck with yours

Where do you apply the white lithium grease? How do you lube the slip shaft? Does the white lithium help lub it longer than pumping the zerk which looses its effectiveness after about a week?

Man I am glad I read this post. I just got a 1995 tacoma and it scared the  out of me when the shifter started moving around when I came to stop. Glad to know that is a common feature of the 1st generation tacoma. I was really worried. Almost didnt buy the truck just because of this issue.

This truck is a work truck - not a lot of fancy mod's here, but it's getting the job done!
reviving an all but dead thread - glad I came across this... just bought my first toyota truck - 98 pre runner with 165,000 miles on it. Freaked me out when the auto shifter was moving around on me (I'm used to driving a stick, so my hand naturally rests on the shifter)... sometimes it moves as much as an 1 correlated with bumps in the road, acceleration, braking, etc... I have been underneath it looking at the motor mounts, transmission mount, etc trying to find a break without much luck... the engine doesn't jump around when shifting gears in the parking lot... I've been really confused and somewhat disappointing in my choice of trucks (I dont have the cash for this truck not to work right now - it is my work truck) glad to see everyone else with this still ok with it all...

x2... i have 254,000 miles and no issues... im glad it floats with all the jumping i do in the truck... if the tranny sat in there all rigid, i can imagine i would have the issues im having with my motor mounts breaking...
