    Hi,

My shifter is stuck in park and won't shift unless I use the override switch. Also the ABS light and traction control light come on when the shifter is stuck.
It is an intermittent issue sometimes it will go away for a few days only to return for a few days. It isn't the a fuse, and my brake lights are working - so I'm guessing its a sensor?

Anybody else had a similar issue? How did you fix it?

    Thanks

Next to the shifter is a little black 1/2" by 1/2" plastic cap. Take that off and press the button in there. Then try to move the shifter, it should work.

I think (not sure what toyota does) most manufacturers use the brake switch to trigger the solenoid to allow the shifter to be moved.

Hopefully the stuck shifter doesn't mean that your brake lights aren't working either.

    Do urself a favor.....

Order a new brake lamp switch

I had same symptoms and after having multiple people including techs and service writers that "the switch will work or it won't, it won't be intermittent".... I finally said "bullshit" and replaced mine.

    Been almost 2yrs.... Guess what?

No issues...... Not a single one since I swapped it!

    Takes 5 seconds.

Also worthy note..... I found dielectric grease on the contacts of the old one.... And not uniformly either... Like it was a goof up or something.

New one had no grease and I left it that way.

Oh.... Its a dealer only part... So dont even bother calling Napa or anyone else... Just get it from the dealership.

For shits and grins, try pumping ur brakes while someone else watches the lights behind you...

Pump them a few dozen times.... The other person should be able to hear the brake pedal being depressed and be able to say whether ur lights come on EVERYTIME or not... Mine were intermittent.

This means, just cuz it may get into drive without the bypass, u may not always have brake lights.

I did wonder if this signal interruption would cause an issue with the cruise control but never tried it... If the cruise looks for a brake signal to disengage passively, would the switch not working sometimes not send signal to the cc?

U always have the manual off switch.......

But if someone panicked and just applied the brakes harder in a freak out situation, would the truck try to maintain the set speed because all it sees it resistance and may think its just a grade and not u braking?

Hypothetical..... But Thats how my brain works.

Good ideas so far for you to look at OP. When asking for help it would make it easier if you would provide information on your truck like year and engine/trans types. While the Tacoma is still a Tacoma, different models have different wiring schematics and such.

Was it this problem that people had when they would wash their trucks ? or was it the ebrake sticking after a wash?

There are aftermarket brake light switches now. BECK/ARNLEY Part # 2012337 and AIRTEX / WELLS Part # 1S9836 are listed on RockAuto. However, given the low price of the parts ($17-$25) relative to shipping charges, I still recommend buying from your local dealer if they have it in stock.

Thanks for the input - I'll check the brakelights more thoroughly tonight. But I'm going to have to take it to the mechanic. Its too cold outside.

This. I had three go out on two different Chevy Aveos me and the wife had before we got the Toyotas. They are super easy to replace. The switch would give out since it is constantly being pressed in and out. It was located under the break pedal itself. We were able to get the switch off of ebay for $10 shipped. Mine got so bad where the lights would stay on or off. Not just going in and out. My cruise control was also ran through that switch on mine so I would always know when it went out. Replaced two in mine. The wifes was two years older and hers was only replaced once.

    back to bone stock.
really bounce on the brake..and then hold it.

did it work? i had to change out the one in my MIL's car. it was awful! total yoga move under the dash..i hate disconnecting electrical connectors that are designed to really hold. doing it all one handed in tight spaces..awful.

I'm agreeing with Justus on the brake pedal switch. It will also trigger the ABS fault, since the ECU does not see the expected signal from the brake switch.
