I'm finally starting to understand what you're talking about. The transmission in this video is off a 1992 5-spd manual Tacoma. He talks about shift forks at 2:08

I had the same issue and I figured out sometimes I needed to pull up the clutch pedal to make sure it came all the way up. If you short stroke it it won’t work the second time you push down on it. Bought a spring and bushing kit but sold the truck before installing.

I was jumping quickly from 1st to reverse and was probably "short stroking" it at one point or another.. could have misaligned or broke a part of the reverse gear mechanism since it does not have a synchronizer and might have not been able to align correctly with an already spinning gear. Gosh I appreciate the engineering behind these vehicles so much more because of all this.

Can't wait to get this transmission out in the open :playball:

Pretty likely nothing bad will happen, the rubber/plastic will get minced and settle into the bottom of the case

no nothing bad but may have a chunk jamming at the base of the shifter. worth a look ,just did mine and it were brittle. but you know.

Bushing was fine before but we changed it just in case. Shifter still getting stuck. Examined a ton of other things while we were in there but never took apart the housing. Really need to see the internals but wouldn’t be so wise to do it out on my street.. especially with multiple jacks to keep the truck in the air. Probably going to get it towed to the shop of someone who knows and is able to work the internals..........

Yes and no. Better to stay with the same one you have. There can be some trans output shaft differences.

By the way, this is the furthest you can get from inside the cab, at least that I can find. Just wanted to post a quick pic so others can get educated if needed

    1A76C729-F47E-4E19-8059-44CBC9437DE8.jpg

you will see that the top bolt that connects to the shaft and holds the piece which holds the shifter has been removed. We wanted to check if the spring on the right was functional. Once the bolt is back in place, the shifter does not move to the right as previously mentioned. But at least now we know it’s not just the right spring that’s broken on the inside.

In other news, I’m calling shops for quotes on transmission rebuilds along with clutch and flywheel resurfacing. Looking to be about $2000 for everything

(Arrow is pointing to the where the installed bolt location normally is, only a little bit of it is visible)
