'16 SR5 2.7 auto 6 speed....OK, I swear I've tried this fifty times, and only got it to work right twice. Usually between 55 and 70 MPH. Manual says move shift lever from "D" to "S" and push forward quickly, and the A/T will shift to 5th, rather than the default 4th gear. There must be some trick to it, that I dont know, or it isnt working properly.
To clarify, it does go to 5th using this technique, but almost always pops briefly into 4th before it does, engine howls, then settles quickly into 5th. Display occasionally shows a quick 4, sometimes not at all, but it nearly always catches by 4th gear first. that cant be transmission friendly.
I didnt do anything differently the couple times it worked....
Anyone else have this issue ?

Must be a function of the speed you are at when you do it. I don't believe it's intended to shift into 5 just because you pushed it forward, that just sets the max gear it will shift into when needed.

It's going to go to 4th first. That's where "S" starts when you move the shifter over.

The manual seems to be wrong in saying that it will go to 5, or a lower gear depending on speed. While coasting downhill at highway speed I have gone from D to S and it always takes me to 4. Of course I suppose it is possible that my transmission has never gone into 6th gear so perhaps it really is only taking it down 1 gear when going from D to S.

I was about to make a thread about this today asking, "At what speed does the S mode shift directly into 5th?"

I have had it shift directly to S3 at 16mph once. I tried again at 16mph and it went to S4...

I usually would go from D to S when around 45 mph or less to prevent overreving the engine at higher speeds. It always defaults to S4 regardless of speed, even when stopped and switching.

S mode just limits the gears you want to access, 4th being default. I don't think it rev matches to select the same gear you're currently in if higher than 4th.

Now if you're in 3rd gear and you swap from D to S you'll stay in 3rd but will still be limited to 4th (S4 displayed).

    This^

I think it just keeps you from moving through the gears but it will not automatically up shift. For instance, in a manual you can be in 4 low and start in third gear if you wanted, this you would have to cycle through 1,2, and 3 but it would keep you from reaching 4th

well, I must have picked the wrong week to quit sniffin glue. I cannot find the instructions that I referred to in the manual. Maybe I read it on a forum somewhere, and thought it was in the manual. But I still stand by the claim that it did go smoothly into "S" 5th from "D" twice. Not sure the actual speed. It does say it will go into 5th, depending on speed, but that point must be north of 70mph. Heres the actual page.

If you are drive speeds enough to be in 4th or higher, it will always default to S4. Always. Been using it for months and has never defaulted to 5th.

but but but....Toyota says it will go into 5 at some point. Tell ya what, I am going to get it up to 75 today and try it. If it drops into 4th at 75, I'll give up. Thats gonna be about what, 4500 rpm.....redline is 5500....should be fine. Yeah...I know what happened to the curious cat !

Good luck. Hope your ATF fluid is topped off and you don't break your tranny. Not teasing you. I seriously hope it all works out for your test.

The freeway was pretty crowded on my drive today, best I could do was 73. Slipped it into S mode from D,and still... it popped into 4th gear , staying below 4000 rpm. I think it may have hit 3800-3900 and I quickly pushed it to 5th, then 6th gear. So, no damage, but I still have no idea when or if it will go to 5th gear in that mode.

haha guess so...I cant offer any evidence to the contrary. I'm assuming it will "S"shift direct to 5 at some point, if nothing else to protect the engine from over-revving. But I'm not gonna find out when that is. I just need to remember to go into S mode before I get up to full cruising speed. Or just put it on ECT and fughettaboutit

The only time I've ever gotten S mode to go into anything other than S4 is when you pop it into S mode but immediately place and hold the shifter in the up position. Occasionally, the tranny will go into S5 instead of S4 for a nanosecond.

I know this on a different engine and tranny, but on my 4runner, if you make the left in S and up immediately it stays in 5th (a five speed, not six). It doesn't have enough time to drop to 4th (as it is supposed to do) because of the shifting lag.

When I drive in shift mode and upshift, I ease up on the gas pedal just a hair and that smooths out the shifts. I think I do the same when moving from D to S4/S5, out of habit. When you guys are moving the selector, are you doing anything with the gas pedal, or just holding steady?

I bet triple digits would yield S5... would probably be past redline in 4th
