Shifted in/out of 4x4 about 10 times on a 7 hr drive today, multiple mountain passes. Each time was at 40-55 mph. Silky smooth every time with coast during every shift.

21 OR here, 22k. My locker got to where it would only blink, never would engage. This is after reading the manual and trying to do things right, as it’s my first brand new vehicle- and first 4WD.

Took it to the dealer (was under warranty at the time, 18k and 18 months in), they replaced the rear carrier, if I remember correctly, and it’s been a smooth locker engagement ever since.

My .02, hope you get it sorted out.

I live in the snow belt and travel frequently on snow, slush and icy roads. Most common vehicles spotted out in the ditch are 4x4 pickups.

4WD does nothing for braking or hitting black ice. I once got run off the road in Kansas by someone driving too fast on the ice/snow ended up
spinning around a speed limit sign which I was resigned to hitting - it was a miracle buy my '92 Toyota Pickup just magically spun right around
it, I shifted into second and got out of that back onto the road and passed the 'dude' stuck in a ditch about 1/4 mile away.

It actually does, but it's a nuanced topic we won't start.

Do you think it is because those with trucks are hesitant to use 4Hi when needed? New trucks including Tacomas are designed to allow shifts in and out of 4WD as needed. Lots of improvements with traction controls compared with older 4WD systems.

I think it's because there are just more 4x4 trucks on the road in these locations and conditions.

Most trucks in the ditch don't have correct tires for the condition.

If you cant see the road I'm in 4x4 all day. It's -35 where I am right now, I turn off 4x4 only for the maintained highways.

Could also be overconfidence in adverse conditions like traveling too fast for conditions.

It's been so warm in Minneapolis/St Paul this winter that I haven't gotten my winter coat out of the closet yet. I might have to today as it dipped to single digits F for the first time.

General comment not about the quoted post:

It's just as easy to keep a FWD car out of the ditch as a 4WD truck. There's really not much difference in daily driving on roads. A 4WD can accelerate a lot faster, but is susceptible to the same sort of spin outs, etc. as a FWD car with some exceptions. RWD on the other hand requires special skills.

I think people often overestimate the safety gains of AWD/4WD over FWD in snowy road conditions.

I'd rather relax in 4x4 personally.

I crashed my dads 4runner when I was young, attributed to lack of experience, but if I was in 4x4 I'm sure it wouldnt have happened. (maybe I would have crashed at a higher rate of speed who knows)

Some people do it as a pride thing. I have friends that will go offroading with me and leave it in 2 wheel drive as a challenge. Never really understood it.

The make sense since the 4runner is RWD when not in 4WD. RWD is the worst in low traction conditions unless you are just trying to have fun.

I as well leave it in 4Hi if I can't see the road, but stay with 2HI otherwise.

After observing drivers over the last few years, I have concluded that people overestimate their driving skills regardless of conditions.
