Shifting lever on Auto. Trans. is sticking

2015 Tacoma

Every couple weeks in the winter I have to blast the shifter lever on the transmission to remove the gunk. Got so bad I busted a shifter cable, cost me $500. Any suggestions ? Is there a boot that should go over it? Can I make a boot? what should I lube it with that wont gunk up.
