alright so i finally got some more work done on the truck, after much thought i decided the the next thing to do was rebuild the master and slave cylinders. so i did that today and i can't say it's perfect but it made a large difference, i can live with it how it is. i think the problem was that the original fluid was so gummy and dirty that when i changed it the first time it left behind lots of goo and dirt so this time i got rid of it all in the cylinders and as i've been driving it's been getting better and better, so it must be getting cleaned out the lines now, one more fluid change in a couple weeks and all should be fine.

    thanks for all the insights

so after a bit i decided that i definitly didn't fix the problem just made it easier to shift, so i took it to my mechanic and he says my syncros are definitly gone needing a rebuild or a full tranny swap. well the guys over at ttora have been telling me that these transmissions just get notchy when they get old and have crappy fluid in them so then there's nothing wrong with it. would you guys agree with this? any one else having the same experience with their 5 speed?

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Have you tried changing the shifter bushings? Bad synchro's can cause grinding. I would change the busshings first and go from there. It is a real simple procedure. Cheaper than synchros also.

I do have the same problem with my 5spd. When it gets cold out the 1st 2nd and reverse gears get really stiff and i have to double clutch to get them to go in nicely, but after the truck is warm it shifts normally. When I got my truck with 220,000 miles a had a full runthrough done with a mechanic and I was told that it is bad synchros that were to be expected with a transmission with that many miles. i have not had any work done to the transmission and I am now past 240,000 miles. There is no slipping, grinding, or gears that pop out. If it sounds like my situation in my truck I would try the bushings, and other than that if it really bothers then replace the transmission its just gotten worn out.
