Fyi, the SsP works great and was worth the money but when the Yo goes back to the dealer i am going to resell it.

Can anyone comment or chime in on if the SSP is a good option to help the truck with towing?

I haul a travel trailer and the truck hunts for gears constantly, and has trouble maintaining 65mph on the highway so it downshifts to 3rd gear which is around 4,000 rpm at 65mph.

The truck makes no power below 3500 rpm and 5 and 6 gears are way too tall. SSP can not over come those poor design issues.

Joe Willie, I will be interested in how you make out. Like you I drove my truck to St Louis from Western NY and was so frustrated with it I felt like pushing into the Mississippi River when I crossed into Missouri. I do not know how many tomes it shifted going west, but it was a lot. It ran great when I drove it east back home. This past weekend the throttle failed to respond 3more times from a dead stop. Hit the gas and NOTHING. When I complained at the dealership, their “master technician” could not duplicate the problem. GOOD LUCK with the buyback.

6th gear is extremely elusive for me on regular flat highway use. I have become content to have it stay in 5th but even slight inclines kicks me into 4th. Unladdened.

My 1100 mile trip gti CLE to Tampa averaged 14.4 mpg at 67 mpg! While in 4th gear at that dropped i was getting 10 mpg according to the truck's "eco app"

I would reconsider towing anything other than a jet ski.

Take the truck back to the dealer. They have had factory technicians work specifically with these problems. The service managers will deny it. The young man that drove my truck opened a case with Toyota USA.

I am chiming in here now because my attorney told me i will have to sign a "keep quiet" clause once i sell the truck back. So i am putting all this BS out there now.

Sorry - didn't mean to hijack this thread. I will move my complaints to a different thread. Again, SSP works great - it forces the Tacoma to hold a gear longer and therefore the next shift is sitting a bit higher in the torque range. it is that simple.

Do you have to leave the truck in "s" mode or will the SSP work in "drive" like normal???

My problem as well. Have you tried using the SSP?

Search YouTube for SSP. That would be way easier than reading this entire thread!

SSP only works in “s” mode

It basically does what you could do by manually controlling it.

Also once you shift in “s” mode it beeps off.

I don’t use mine all the time but it’s really handy when I need it.

Basically I have normal D. Then d and ect. Then sspro then normal s mode. And I cycle through them as I need too.

I only have v1 chip so add two more sspro with the new chip

Just had my first drive with the SSP (mode 1). It was so nice. Now my $34K 2017 truck drives the way, in my opinion, a normal vehicle should. For the money, can't beat it.

Exactly how I feel. Works well combined with the TRD exhaust and intake too.

What did you gain with the intake and exhaust? Any low end power?

The SSPro won't increase your fuel economy but it will stop the crazy shifting. It's great for in town driving keeps the transmission in the right gear.

All I can say is that with the SSP providing smoother and better timed shift points and the exhaust and intake providing an awesome sound, my truck just feels more complete now. I won’t claim any HP gains from the exhaust and intake but there is a noticeable improvement in throttle response and it just “feels right” when accelerating. I’ve never been comfortable with the concept of tuning so this combo works for me and I’m pleased with the performance improvements.
