Should I apply the grease on the inside (between the shim and pad), on the outside between the shim and pistons, or both?

    I’d check the FSM.

probably doesn’t hurt do put a thin film on both and not so much that the plate keeps falling off.

I have my own grease. I believe permatex purple ceramic that I put on stuff like that like the back of pads and ears to help things move freely and not have any separate pieces dry, rattling, and making noise.
