I have a 22 Tacoma Sport and I had the 10k service in December. Noticed a shimmy/vibration in the rear over 40mph as well as rear fishtail when taking turns too fast. Took it back in and they couldn’t find anything wrong but had them balance the tires. One rear tire was 12 oz out of balance. They added weights. Still having a very slight shimmy and now it feels floaty like I don’t have as much control especially on the highway. Tire pressures are good. Any idea what is going on? I only have 13k miles. Thanks!!

A guy would have to drive the truck and see but 12oz is alot of weight for a wheel to be out. Especially in a stock size. Possibly 1.2oz?

Either way, when did you start noticing this sensation? What kind of tires on the vehicle? Any lift? Basically what's all on the truck that it didn't roll off the assembly line with?

Also what specific situation are you getting that sensation? Turning right at a light going 5-10mph or also cornering at 45mph for example.

Maybe it was 1.2 oz. It all started after they rotated my tires. I have Wrangler Duratrak 265/70 R16. They came on the truck. I also haven’t added anything extra. It’s a 22 Tacoma Sport XP. The shimmy is barely there since the balancing but I do feel it at about 60 mph and the truck has a floaty feeling like I’m not as in control.

What's the tire pressure currently? Oil changes are notorious about putting the tires 5-10 over, and that's going to make it feel like it wants to wander just a hair more.

I am surprised that it would be that noticable on stock tires though.

So i'm not there so i'm guessing but, based on them adding 13oz to the one wheel I would guess it's an issue with the tires. If they had a road force balancer they'd know for sure but otherwise I would verify yourself that your tire pressures are correct then give it a couple tanks of gas or so and see what it does. These trucks always have a little shake to them I find. Maybe the tire had some abnormal wear (which is typical of a duratrac) thats giving the squirrely feeling. If nothing changes then bring it back of course and see if they have the same truck with the same tires on the lot so you and the tech can do a back to back road test. Subjective issues are kinda hard to diag online. Let us know the outcome

Thanks to both of you. Tire pressure cold is 35 each tire.

Just for fun see if it improves if you go back to stock pressure of 29 psi. I don't have high hopes as there shouldn't be a huge difference there. But it's still worth a try.

Sounds like a broken tire band. Replace the tire on the wheel with bad balance.

    No luck?

Tires examined for runout and belt condition, then rebalanced, at a quality tire shop.

    Better but still 'floaty'?

Get a quality alignment which should be available at the same quality tire shop. Also check rear U bolts are torqued

Thank you to everyone. Now I have options to try instead of Toyota just saying they can’t find anything wrong.

Go to a tire store and have them look at it

Of course, it’s a 35-40lb tire. That’s a lot of weight moving around if it’s not concentric or unstable why wouldn’t it. Plus the floating feeling in the rear.
