I have a 2016 TRD OR with auto trans. I've done the TSB update about 400ish miles ago and greased my zerks when the truck had about 500 miles on it. So far the TSB has been an improvement. However, when I took the truck in, I told the service tech I was getting a shimmy/shudder/slip feeling when the truck shifted into 4th and 5th gears. He said the TSB should fix that. I also asked him to manually check the tranny fluid and he said it was fine.

Had a co-worker riding with me last week and he noticed it too (he's owned 2 second gen Tacomas). The problem is worse with the AC on. I don't really notice it with the ECT button engaged because the truck shifts at higher RPM's. The problem seems to occur up until 1900-2000 RPM's where the truck seems to regain its steam and lose the shudder/slip feeling.

I've read threads about shuddering upon deceleration but not during acceleration. On the TSB sticky thread it seemed like several other folks were having the same issues. Anyone have a guess of what's going on?

Still looking for any possible help with this...or others with the same issue that can chime in. Feels like the engine shifts too quick and lugs badly in those gears. 1, 2, 3, & 6 feel normal. Usually occurs in the low 30's (mph) and mid to upper 40's (mph).

I have a manual transmission, so not the same, but I consider 1500 my absolute minimum RPM in the higher gears (4,5,6, most of the time even 3rd). There is zero torque on the low end and it is very evident in the higher gears. Maybe that is what you are experiencing? But I'm surprised you are ok with 6th at low RPM.

Is there a sound associated with it? If I start to lug my engine in 2nd at around 7-8 mph there is a deep vibration sound that starts.

No there's no apparent sound with it. Just a shaking feeling until the RPM's make it to a certain point (1800ish. When the gear is shifted, I end up in the +/-1200 RPM area. Some have pointed to the torque converter.

Yes, not sure why I haven't experienced it in 6th gear. Maybe because I'm mostly in 4th-5th around town.

I have the exact same symptoms, with added hard downshifts that are inconsistent. Aceeleration is wierd. Sometimes you press pedal hard truck does nothing then takes off like a bat out of he__. sometimes is fine until about 30mph then lugs and shutters every time you apply light pedal all the way to about 60mph. I did try ac off like you suggested in the other thread. It is improved but still noticeable. Ect mode I do not notice the shutter, but the truck holds 4 gear until about 55-60 mph and does not want to upshift (finally does). After 3 weeks(1 week at a a time)at the dealer ship I am going to reengage Toyota for a solution. Scott

Here is a universal diagnostic for vibrations and shudders . I suggest trying to narrow things down a little
Lets look at some Vibration diagnostics . Anytime someone asks a vibration question , I copy and paste this .
I believe there are at minimum at least 12 different vibration issues assosiated with the Tacoma and all the vibrations / shudders get mixed into the same pot leaving members scratching their heads .
Have you greased your driveline ?http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/tec...rks-total.html
Do you know how to grease your driveline properly http://aftermarket.federalmogul.com/...%20FAQ%27s.pdf
Have you checked your carrier bearing https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/how-to-replacing-carrier-bearing.260283/
Does the truck vibrate in park or neutral and does the vibration change with accelarator pedal ?
Does the truck vibrate while holding the brakes and hitting the gas - Automatic ?
Does the truck vibrate in neutral at a stand still ?or coasting in neutral ?
Does the truck vibrate in 4x4 ?
    Does the truck " Only vibrate " from 1st to 2nd gear ? https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/vibration-when-accelerating-from-stop-anyone-fixed-it.300155/
Does the truck only vibrate in 2 wheel drive ?https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...differential-bearing-vibration-thread.152173/
Does the truck vibrate with the serpentine belt removed ?
Does the truck vibrate cold or hot ?
Does the truck vibrate if you select nuetral and coast to a slow roll without using the brakes ?
Does the truck vibrate as you are braking ?
Does the truck vibrate with weight in the truck or empty ?
Does the truck vibrate while upshifting ? Have you checked your trans fluid ?
Does the truck vibrate while downshifting ? Have you checked your trans fluid ?
When was your last transmission fluid service ?
Now that you have a lift kit installed the truck vibrates . Did you cancel your drive line angles ?
Have you looked at the condition of your tires ? Toyota says to rotate every 5000 miles .Tacoma tires must be road forced balanced using the Haweka adapter on the tire machine [IMG] tsu00296.pdf
When was the last time you rotated your tires ? Are you using LUG centric aftermarket wheels ? have you considered " HUB centric rings "http://www.amazon.ca/s/?ie=UTF8&key...vptwo=&hvqmt=e&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_7ybe1f1pby_e
Have the balance weights fallen off the tires ?
The proper and only way to test for bad universal joints is with the driveshaft removed . You cant tell if the universal joints are seized or tight spots with the driveshaft on the truck . You may see play in the universal joints , but you wont be able to properly check the u-joints without removing the driveshaft .All it takes to create a vibration is one seized universal cup and there are 4 cups within each joint .
With this said , you cant tell if that cup is seized with the driveshaft connected .
Removing the driveshaft and manipulate each universal joint by hand from side to side feeling for tight spots as you go is the only way to check for bad u joints
If you beleive its bad motor mounts or transmission mounts , grab a big pry bar and pry at the mounts to see if the rubber is torn or weak .

    CANCEL DRIVELINE ANGLES http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd...tion-free.html

Have you had the TSB applied? I did and it was an improvement. If I could get rid of the weird shudder, I'd love the truck.

Please update us with any updates or your outcome.

Both TSB's and a crank shaft sensor. I like everything else about the truck also. Only thing that that TSB's fixed on my truck was the shift 2-3(when transmission cold) flare is much better. and the shift from r-d now engages properly.

Gear cruncher thank you for posting the universal diagnostics. My truck is a limited completely stock. mostly i feel the shutter during light acceleration(truck lugs badly). Is mostly noticed when you let the truck shift to 6th gear and need to accelerate a few mph without letting downshift.

    @gearcruncher

Thanks for the volume of info! I'll read through it and see what I can come up with.

I greased the zerks (properly) at 500 miles. I only have 1200 miles on the truck now which is all stock. I only get the shudder while accelerating when it shifts into 4th and 5th gears in 2wd. I don't drive that fast in 4wd. When I let off the gas, it goes away instantly.

I took it to the stealership to have the TSB applied and asked that the tranny fluid be manually checked. 2 hours later they said all done and the fluid level was correct. I guess I need to dive under the truck and see if they even touched a bolt. Or I guess I could read the write up on how to manually check it. But hey, it's a new truck under warranty. Like others I feel it should be their job to fix this stuff not mine.

Add me to the group. I have been trying to figure out if I was being to sensitive about the truck and just attributing it to slight bumps in the road. My symptoms are a slight shudder at mid to high speed at low rpm when trying to lightly accelerate. Going up a hill makes it more evident. TSB has been applied and i requested the dealer properly grease my drive line. It is not a horrible shudder, just bugs me.

I don't notice it with ECT engaged but I don't run ECT much because it is so jumpy and likes to surge when at low speeds.

Dont be afraid to run your trucks by a dependable transmission shop in your area and let these professionals take your truck for a drive .
This is what they do for a living every day
Road tests are always free and in most cases , a good diagnostic specialist can figure out whats going on with your truck just by the test drive .
Ride with the guy and see what he has to say , then approach Toyota for warranty work after a third party transmission shop has narrowed things down for you .

So took my truck in for the 5k maintenance and told them about my issue. He called it "gear searching" and said just about every 3rd gen brought in has complained about it. He said basically Toyota will work out the kinks which may take a few years. Right now, the transmission feels like a Microsoft product.

I read in other threads about a new TSB for the transmission. I guess only time will tell if the software can fix this issue.
