I want to replace the shock and struts on my 96 Tacoma. I’m looking at the Bilstein 5100 set-up. Looks like I can get 2 shocks and 2 struts for 380$
Is this all I would need? Are there better choices. My truck is stock. I would love to get 1” more of height but not sure if that takes a lot more....

Get all new hardware (bushings etc) for the shocks. You can adjust the height of the front coil. I would recommend getting your vendor to set that up. I did not want to mess with the coil. For the rear you can add a block(s), AAL or new leaf springs (most $).

Subscribed for current suggestions. I think most guys replace the leaf springs as most of us are nearing 20 years old. I think mine sit flat and am on original bilstein shocks/struts at 150k.

ok, first, all 4 of them are shocks. The fronts aren't struts.

Yes, of course there are "better" choices, but you'll blow your budget, lol...

If you want to lift it an inch, you'll need something to lift the rear end as well, like a longer shackle. Far and away the best option for 1" of lift. blocks suck (increase axle wrap), and add-a-leafs increase spring preload (makes it stiffer), and new springs, while perhaps the "best" option, the smallest lift I'm aware of for a non-custom spring are the 1.5" Deaver J59s at ~$700...

I'd consider a new rubber cushions and hardware, too. Maybe a new top plate depending on the condision of yours. (you'd need 2 of these) As for installation, you'll need a spring compressor (rent for free at most auto parts stores), and make sure you loosen your control arm bolts (the ones at the frame that hold the bushings) just a bit. This will allow them to rotate slightly and then tighten them when you're at your new ride height (so the rubber is "relaxed" at the new ride height rather than pre-twisted a little bit).

I'd also suggest getting an alignment when you're done.
