Having had a phone and email communication with Bilstein, i found the same thing out (apart from the height adjust on the front 5100's). To paraphrase the Bilstein rep"I can't tell you they are the same internals, but I also can't tell you they're not!" So 4600 rear, 5100 fronts

I ordered The KYB SM5640 pair of upper plates- the one that sits on top of spring w/ the 3 nuts, studs & includes the rubber cushion. They were new open box on Ebay for $36.00. They came today. Still waiting on shocks.

While waiting for my shocks- I'm wondering how those stock Toyota springs with 171,000 miles on them are doing. I read somewhere that the stock TRD off road spring (prerunner) is progressive. I've read Bilstein recommends running the stock springs with the 4600.
Does someone have a part number for the stock replacement spring?
Searches get me OME 880's or 881's. And those aren't stock.

So what is the life expectancy of the stock springs?

There is no set time/mileage for springs. To many variables. Maybe 200,000 miles, maybe more, maybe less.

Unless I missed it in this thread, what about new hardware (rubber cushions / washers / retainers) for the rear shock upper mounts?

Probably too late now unless they're still on backorder, but I would've went through parts.toyota.com for the shocks (could've picked them up for ~$250). A lot of the Toyota dealers who sell online through there offer a significant discount (30% or more!). Either order through a local dealer on there and pick them up locally, or order from any dealer and have them shipped for free (they've been running a free shipping promo for the past month or so and it expires at the end of the month).

Your call on the springs, but if it were me I'd replace them at that mileage/age and since you're going through all the effort. TRD Off Road springs are progressive. Yes, you'd run stock springs with 4600s, however, in your case this really doesn't matter since you just went with new Toyota TRD Off Road Bilsteins and not 4600s. P/Ns for OEM front coil springs with the truck specs you provided are as follows:

    48131-AD241 (RH passenger side)
    48131-AD251 (LH driver side)

Rear shock top hardware is available through Autozone from Energy Suspension. I think it was about 20 bucks.

Time to do shocks and struts. I'm having trouble finding the proper strut shocks for the front of my 2010 Tacoma ex. cab TRD off road 4.0L 2wd though, I absolutely do not want it to sit any lower than it already does. The stock Bilsteins i just pulled out of it measure 24 1/2" fully extended and have the p/n 48510-AD061, i've been told that that p/n no longer exists and is superseded by p/n 48510-09U61 but nobody, including the dealership, can give me the extended length measurement of it. As i said i do not want to lower this truck at all, wouldn't even mind raising it an inch or two but certainy don't want it any lower. Does anyone know the extended length measurement of the bilstein 48510-09U61 or know of a suitable replacement with a extended measurement of at least 24 1/2"?

Get 3rd gen TRD OR take offs. They will fit just fine and if you include the 3rd gen coil springs you will get a 1inch front level.

    lift
was reading this thread and thought I'd ask..... I have a 2008 trd off road that i bought 6 yrs ago and it has a couple inch lift with about 85,000 miles now... I wouldn't mind going back to stock shocks and stock height, would I order the same part numbers for stock shocks in the second post or are the off road's different? thanks
